This will be a weekly post.
Count is now 160 judges confirmed.
112 District Court judges
46 Circuit Court judges
2 Supreme Court justices
Steven Menashi was confirmed to the 2nd (NY, CT, VT) circuit this week, flipping that circuit from majority Democrat to majority Republican appointees.
Cloture was filed on two 11th circuit nominees so that circuit will be flipped from a tie to majority Republican as well.
While McConnell is confirming these Circuit nominees, he's slow-walking district nominees for some reason.
There are 25 judicial nominees on the floor waiting for votes, 2 Circuit, 23 District. Yet the Senate held exactly FOUR floor votes this week. FOUR. And two of those were cloture votes. So the Senate voted on just TWO things this week, a Homeland Security position and a judgeship.
McConnell may be putting some kind of a deal together where a number of nominees are confirmed at once by voice vote like last year, but it would be far easier to just call the roll. It's not like they're doing anything else!
the budget bills may be the cause, maybe he wants leverage on a negotiation
It will be a day for celebration when the 9th Circuit is finally flipped.
The left love the 9th circuit as it gives them what they can not get from the voters are the legislature.
It will be a bonus if President Trump can put another conservative on the Supreme Court.
Senator Patty’s words are music to my ears. I only hope she’s correct.
The nominees can’t be voted on until they get through the vetting process; conducted by the FBI (don’t be surprised if there is a bit of foot dragging there). Plus, the ‘vetting office’ of the FBI is having to get through a record number of nominations, since no President has ever nominated this many judges this quickly.
I believe McConnell, when he says that he will leave no vacancy unfilled by the end of the Senate term in January 2021. There’s much to complain about; but filling judicial vacancies isn’t one of them.
A judge was appointed to the 9th Circuit last week, making it 16D - 13R. That was the final vacancy; 3 have been filled so far.
The oldest 4 members of the 9th Circuit are all D’s; born during the WWII era. Trump will need to win a 2nd term to flip it.
I’m confused. The list at: https://www.uscourts.gov/judges-judgeships/judicial-vacancies/current-judicial-vacancies shows open seats without nominees in Central California.
09 - CA-C Pregerson,Dean D. Senior 01/28/2016
09 - CA-C Guilford,Andrew J.Senior 07/05/2019
09 - CA-C O’Connell,Beverly Deceased 10/08/2017
09 - CA-S Anello,Michael M.Senior 10/31/2018
09 - CA-S Houston,John A. Senior 02/06/2018
09 - CA-S Huff,Marilyn L. Senior 09/30/2016
There are no CA seats filled by the nominees from 11/5 who are not yet on the judiciary committee list. I have listed that 11/5 group below.
That leaves me puzzled why the map shows California as having all open positions with nominees in place. Perhaps there is another site to check?
The good news is that with the nominees from Nov 6th the tally is 98 open positions, 18 announced vacancies (116 vacancies), and 44 posted nominees, 5 posted nominees for future openings plus the 8 announced nominees below (57 nominees) for a total of only 59 positions without nominees.
I hope POTUS & McConnell make good on their statement that they will confirm another 30 judges by the end of the year. 190 Judges confirmed would be a great Christmas gift to America.
Nov 6th Nominees
Andrew L. Brasher Eleventh Circuit
John P. Cronan Southern District New York
William Scott Hardy Western District Pennsylvania.
John F. Heil III for the Northern, Eastern and Western Districts of Oklahoma
John C. Hinderaker District Arizona.
Iris Lan Southern District New York.
Matthew T. Schelp Eastern District Missouri
Carl Ezekiel Ross Associate Judge on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia
Plus two Tax court Nominees

There are two older judges appointed by Bush in the 9th Circuit who have announced retirement, Carlos Bea and Jay Bybee. Nominees Bumatay(1978) & Van Dyke(1972) are currently in committee hearings to fill those positions. Even though these replacements will not change the 16D:13R the replacements will allow those seats to remain conservative for many years to come.
“While McConnell is confirming these Circuit nominees, he’s slow-walking district nominees for some reason.”
Cocaine Mitch is known as McTurtle for good reason.
I WISH I believed that the appointed Republicans would stay true to the Law. Not a given. And how many D appointed judges get more Conservative as they age? NONE. Too often Republicans are too squishy, wanting to be liked rather than ruling according to THE LAW.
Milan Smith is next, at 78 yrs old in 2020. Need to push him to senior and get his replacement asap. He is a GOP appointee.
After that is a whole bunch of Rats in mid-seventies.
When will they finally admit that The Notorious RBG is already dead?
I hope we can get many of the 70+ Republican appointees to take senior status now or at the least in President Trump’s second term.
Nominees announced for the California courts include Steve Kim, Scott Holcomb, Todd Robinson, Michelle Pettit and Knut Johnson. These have not yet been formally submitted to the Senate. They are probably still going through their background checks.
Thank you. That’s good news.
