Three proposed rule changes by the Trump administration could cause millions of poor people to lose access to food stamps and decrease the size of the benefit for millions more.
Over the past year, the Department of Agriculture proposed three changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP or food stamps. The new rules create stricter work requirements for program eligibility, cap deductions for utility allowances and "reform" the way 40 states automatically enroll families into SNAP when they receive other forms of federal aid.
A study by the Urban Institute released this week examined the three rules in combination for the first time and found that 3.7 million fewer people would receive SNAP in an average month, 2.2 million households would see their average monthly benefits drop by $127, more than 3 million others would see an average drop of $37 per month, and 982,000 students would lose access to free or reduced lunches.

Frankly, foodstamps should only be given to adults for 6 months twice in their lifetimes. It wasn’t supposed to be a lifetime of freebies for generation after generation.
Yep, the “40 states automatically enroll families into SNAP when they receive other forms of federal aid” means basically that when a woman enrolls in WIC, illegal alien or not, she is automatically enrolled in SNAP.
The article acts as though there are not millions of people who are simply gaming the system.
The article acts as though millions of the single mothers (how did that happen) who are using “SNAP” aren’t putting $200+ Nikes on their kids feet.
The article acts as though there aren’t people using EBT blowing the EBT money on chips and soda at convenience store prices to the tune of $40 or $50.
The system is fraught with waste.

As we stand in line at Wally world seeing two you kids in their 20’s buying $800 of high priced steaks etc with food stamps.
Oh, SNAP, indeed. As if kids don’t get free breakfast, lunch and snacks at school. In the summer, schools have lunch trucks drive around with free hot lunches for anyone 0-21. Some schools even have free suppers thanks to the working class taxes.
Then there’s the food banks and other charities. There is always the push during holidays to hand out meal boxes with turkeys and hams along with all the fixin’s.
Trump should also put restrictions on what EBT cards can buy. Nothing but real food and no restaurants.
We never ate better than during that brief period. By the time I got my hearing and all my back unemployment compensation reinstated, I had a better paying job as well.
