The Austin Chamber of Commerces coalition ATX Helps raised just $50,000 in its first month and remains far from the $2 million goal it set to raise by the end of the year.
And at the current pace, it would take them more than two decades to raise their ultimate goal of $14 million to build a new temporary, emergency homeless shelter...
Austin currently only has 812 shelter beds, and on any given night when these beds are full, there are still 1,100 people living outdoors without a roof, bathroom, showers or laundry facilities.
Austin has been riddled with increasing issues related to homelessness over 2019. Back in June, the Austin City Council passed an ordinance that largely decriminalized sitting, laying or camping in public places.
The changes were met with much criticism and debate, with some saying they exacerbated or exposed already growing problems.

Amazing how allowing bums to camp out on your office's front doors suddenly changes even liberals minds.
The city has bought one hotel and is in the process of buying a second hotel to house the homeless which is costing the city a pretty penny. A few days before Thanksgiving, they made the homeless move out from some underpasses but that was just the once so they moved right back. It won't be long before Austin and SF are indistinguishable.
Take the $50,000 and put them all on buses and send them to NYC with a note to the NYC mayor “It is better to give than receive Merry Christmas”.
Wow, it’s like Duluth MN down there.
Elect a Democrat, get Democrat results! Cities in ruin.
WHOA!!! Back the truck up! A city passed THAT LAW in 2019? Especially an ultra-liberal city?
How can that be? Everybody knows it "isn't a crime to be homeless" and the homeless bums enrich the cultural mosaic of any city they deign to visit.
They DEcriminalized the behavior, NOT criminalized.
Maybe they realize that leftist prefer to use the homeless to virtue signal off of more than they would part with their own money to house them?
When you boil it down, what really happened is that all the “virtue-signallers” and “social justice warriors” see the establishment of ATX Helps as their success. Now its time for someone else to fund it. You didn’t think THEY were gonna fund it? Muh starbucks!
They did all the hard work by casting their compassionate and well-intentioned VISION as well as set a larger than reality expectation for sombody else to acheive
OK, Boomer! Cough up the dough you’ve squirreled away.
Then why cant these leftard politicians SHOW US how “compassionate” they are by housing them in their OWN homes?
That’s why i HATE effing liberals..GD hypocrites.
Oops! I missed the “de” and that obviously completely changed the meaning.
I thought it was too good to be true! Stupid me.
Thanks for correcting me.
Wait, I thought liberals were the kindest, most compassionate and caring people on the planet. How could they have only raised that much money? I don’t understand.
ha ha ha
Every year, one of the Austin tv stations has a Christmas toy drive. Last year, they didn’t even have enough to fill the back of a shiny new red pickup. One would have thought the station manager would have made his employees fill it just to look good on camera.
Austin’s treehuggers want someone else to hug their trees and someone else’s money to fund their idiotic ideas.
use the 50 k to pay the homeless to pick up litter...most of it they created in the first place?
I drove through Austin a few weeks ago and it looks like crap. Turning into SF.
They have a politician problem.
Hey, I need my car washed and waxed. Who do I call at the City of Austin to have them handle?
It is now ingrained in today's society for liberals to *hate* everything associated with non-liberals (and let's be fair, there are a good number of conservatives who *hate* everything associated with non-conservatives). The main difference being liberals see nothing wrong with making others acquiesce against their free will.
Oh wait. "Austin" not "Austria".
OK, send the Californians back home.
Austin owns 8,500 acres of Parkland. One park is 3,500 acres and is only 6 miles from downtown Austin. Another Park, Zilker, is IN downtown Austin. It is 350 acres.
Austin should quit buying hotels it no way can afford and set aside ground in one or more of these parks with appropriate sanitary facilities, electricity and law enforcement patrols. The homeless can pitch their tents and the problem is solved for very little money.
But, the Libs love their parks and will never allow this to happen. The only answer to high Austin taxes then is to MOVE which myself and thousands have.
What next? Why, raise taxes of course!
