Downing Street is threatening the future of the BBC by insisting it is seriously considering decriminalising non-payment of the licence fee, while boycotting Radio 4s Today programme over the broadcasters supposed anti-Tory bias.
No 10 pulled ministers from Saturdays edition of the Today programme and sources said it intended to withdraw engagement from the show in future.

During the election campaign, Johnson threatened to take the BBCs licence fee away as he called into question its status as a publicly funded broadcaster. The prime minister suggested the licence fee, which is guaranteed to continue until at least 2027, was a general tax that could no longer be justified when other media organisations had found other ways of funding themselves.
Any changes to the BBCs funding model would require parliament to pass fresh legislation. Abolition would be hard, but a bigger risk for the BBC is the negotiations with the government over the cost of the licence fee between 2022 and 2027.

“......and Trump should follow that lead and defund NPR.”
Yes, yes, YESSSSS!
Let the clowns make it on their own.
Of course, being liberals, competition “triggers” them.
And break up cable bundling. Make CNN stand on its own. It will sink in a year.
Cut the license fee to 1£ per year.
Oh sorry, thats licence fee.
People who serve in President Trump’s Cabinet need to stop appearing on CNN and MSNBC. It does no good.
None of the other channels are funded by enforced taxation and they are thriving; have been doing so for decades.
There is NO seperate tax, in America that funds PBS, NPR, etc., that money ( which needs to stop being given them ) is fungible money from our income taxes, which can be far better used on building THE WALL, upgrading our military, better stuff for VA hospitals, and other such things.
FYI...prior to the whole PBS thing, channel 13 in NYC ( which is part of the PBS spiderweb ) was an independent network, that had fantastic shows, which NO taxes funded. And before any putdowns, I have always watched 13 and other PBS channels ( when I was living outside of that area ) and have seen it go waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay downhill. If it weren't for the Brit shows ( which have also gone downhill, BADLY, in recent years ) PBS would be worthless and unwatchable; except for a couple of American cooking shows.
The BBC continues to claim it has trucks that can identify you are watching an unlicensed BBC television show, yet, they have never convicted anyone of doing do.
It is a ridiculous directive control to coerce citizens into paying the hundreds of dollars a year for an Over-The-Air BBC viewing license.
This is a pretty good video describing how crazy this all is:

They can make up for it by fees from the cat detector van.
The one from the Ministry Of Housinge ?
That was great, very informative and funny.
Lol.
Ow-zinge
Decriminalize?
Snort.
My suggestion: It’s past time for Britt to have themselves a t(v)-party. Toss the damn things, or your licenses, into the Thames.
Throughout Europe you pay an annual tax for every radio or tv that you own. Calling it a “licence fee” changes nothing. Stupid law.
The cat detector vans are the worst!
