The Trump administration announced Friday that it would block a rule designed to phase out older incandescent bulbs and require Americans to use energy-efficient light bulbs.
In announcing the move, the secretary of energy, Dan Brouillette, who is a former auto lobbyist, said the administration had chosen to protect consumer choice by ensuring that the American people do not pay the price for unnecessary overregulation from the federal government. The new rule was unnecessary, he said, because innovation and technology are already increasing the efficiency and affordability of light bulbs without federal government intervention.
The rule, which would have gone into effect on Jan. 1, was required under a law passed in 2007 during the administration of President George W. Bush.
Noah Horowitz, director of the Natural Resources Defense Councils center for energy efficiency standards, assailed the move, saying the administration had just thumbed its nose at Congress, Americas families and businesses, and the environment.
The group has estimated that the administrations action could cost American consumers an extra $14 billion on annual energy bills.
In September, the Trump administration announced it would roll back a rule to apply energy efficiency standards to specialty light bulbs like three-way, flame-shaped and globe-shaped bulbs. At that time, it also indicated that it might block the rule regarding the general-purpose bulbs as well.
In response, several states [...] passed standards that would match the federal requirements called for under the Bush-era law.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association, the trade group for manufacturers of light bulbs, has said that government requirements for greater bulb efficiency are unnecessary. The groups response to the September announcement stated that Americans were already buying more efficient bulbs and that the final rule will not impact the markets continuing, rapid adoption of energy-saving lighting.

CFLs have mercury and that’s what hit the market first...and they’re stupid cheap.
LEDs have been big money savers for us. Their economic superiority is undeniable, especially in warm climates where the heat load of incandescents costs hundreds to overcome. We installed over fifty in our new house three years ago, and have had to replace exactly one. Just one summer of lower electricity bills paid for them all. My 401K should be such a great investment.
The “rule” ended good paying jobs for one of the poorest communities around, East Cleveland, OH.

And ended them for no good reason, btw. I had one of these dandy new bulbs catch on fire in my place, emitting the smoke from hell.
CFLs are obsolete and quickly disappearing from the shelves. Mercury is irrelevant to the light bulb conversation.

Also the LED Headlights have to go!!!! They are blinding and dangerous.
A STUPID, unnecessary, ill-timed event.
Years ago when this was first introduced, it was a bad idea and a mistake.
NOW, a whole “light bulb generation” later, it’a different story.
*****LED***** is here! WAY brighter, long lasting, energy saving (very little energy wasted as “heat”).
“LED light bulbs contain no dangerous chemicals, allowing you to dispose of them in the same manner as incandescent bulbs and halogen bulbs. “
Why the love affair for an inferior product? The filaments always breaking if you just bump them. They were always burning out. You could burn yourself from the wasted energy given off as heat. There was NOTHING to love about incandescent light bulbs.
The time for incandescent light bulbs has passed.
Hey, let’s bring back rotary phones, black & white TVs, and wringer washing machines.
Try Bulbs.com or 1000bulbs.com
Our local Home Depot has them by the case. As I recall 24 each in a case.
Another good idea introduced poorly.
The technology for 1.6 gpf toilets wasn’t ready when this law was introduced, causing problems.
Now, a whole “toilet flushing generation” later, things are just fine. BILLIONS (maybe trillions) of gallons of water not polluted.
Low flow toilets have saved Americans a lot of money. Buying the water in the first place and then paying for it again on the way out the sewer through charges for that.
MOST FLUSHES ARE FOR URINE! ANY toilet can flush urine with ONE flush. IF you need to flush two or three times for #2, you are STILL only using the same amount of water used in one flush of an old toilet.
EAT MORE FRUIT!
Yeah, it was mostly LEDs and 72-watt “replaces 100W” stuff. There were some expensive impact-resistant 100W bulbs, but I never did check lumens.
Thanks...
found some real ones on eBay

Don’t get me started on “bitch bowls”
Plus lower the cost of electricity.
In California it is around .22 cents a kw and climbing. You save one way and the gov’t costs you more another way.
