How a family of 3 finds hope and faith as they cope with 3 different cancer diagnoses

For the past six months, a husband, wife and their teenage son have been dealing with a devastating health crisis. The close-knit family have been undergoing treatment for three different types of cancers.

While they've struggled with the tremendous emotional and physical burden, the family's spirituality and faith has kept them going, along with the support of their community and people from across the country.

"Things that are meant to destroy us can be turned around for good and there's been a lot of good happened out of all of this," mother Kathy Desclefs, 56, of Jacksonville, Florida, told TODAY.

This is not a coincidence. There is a common cause somewhere.

“You got to be in the present,” Kathy said. “I can’t worry about tomorrow. Yesterday’s over. I can’t do anything about it. It’s just what I have in front of me.”

Those are wise words right there.

Hope they all do well with treatments. What the 17yo has is usually curable.

Once knew a family where two parents and a child were fighting cancer around the same time. Within a few years, they were all right. That was 15 years ago. Hope they're still doing well.

It's definitely statistically rare but coincidences do occur. Many people don't want to believe this and are always looking to blame someone (with money).

Having been a survivor of multiple cancers (colon, liver)and others, I have been convinced that it is a combination of environmental and heriditary reasons. I have lost most of my families on both sides - mother (breast), father (lung), grandfather on mom’s side, grandmother on my Dad’s side (pancreatic), numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins on both sides. One brother is a lung cancer survivor, the other has blood cancer. It was interesting that one of the Doctors wanted to do extensive DNA testing (which was a lot of out of pocket expense for me). The attending Doctor brilliantly deduced “why are we doing this test? It is apparent that it runs in your family.” Cancer is a reality for many of us. However, I have learned that it is just like any other illness, it is just a name that can be deadly. So much emphasis is put into it that it has supreme ‘scariness’. But, thank God, HIS name is above all other names. Their are many illnesses that do scare me more than cancer - Alzheimer’s, etc. Yet, here I still am, trying to serve God in my own way. I will be here as long as my mission exists. Dying is not the worst thing in the world. It is what you do with the time that you are given that is important!

Like me you've become an expert on the family illness. Causes of death is something I studied (degree requirement) and I also raise animals and looked into causes of death there too (there is a lot of veterinary cancer research). You seem on the right path. In animal cancer there's a genetic component that couples with environment. Sometimes it's mostly genetic, sometimes not. One of the recently discovered causes in dogs is a bacteria implicated in stomach cancer. Even there, there's clearly a genetic component.

I lived in a tiny town that had two young children ( different families) come down with cancer, a very rare occurrence. The state department of health was all over the town studying the occurrence. The result was that it was determined to be a statistical anomaly.

Hopefully this family knows or will find out why they get cancer. In the mean time, they are in the hands of God and faith in Him will see them through it.

I'm blaming some yet unknown factor, e.g. something in the environment and/or genetics.

I have two relatives, sisters, of whom the son of one and the husband of the other died of the same, somewhat rare malignant neoplasm of the central nervous system: neoblastoma multiforme. Coincidence? No. Each of the sisters was infected with the same carcinogenic agent, which she passed on, one to her son, the other to her husband.

My wife had two paternal aunts and one uncle, siblings. The uncle and one aunt died of the same lymphoma. The other aunt died of breast carcinoma. Coincidence? I don't think so.

At the individual level each will have a specific cause. It’s not a coincidence that any individual can have cancer.

What makes this unusual (and news worthy) is that a population (3 people (2 not related?) from the same household have cancer). In populations statistical anomalies or coincidences (circumstances without apparent causal connection) occur.

Somewhat here as well, had 2 maternal aunts marry brothers who carried the B.C. gene down the male line which is rare, their female offspring began development of Breast Cancer at a early age, now are all gene tested as the 2nd generation developed it early...My BIL has Duchene MD late onset the worse form of MD, his younger brother has it only worse..lifestyle differences. His son who died in a car wreck was gene positive and would be a late onset. While BIL’s son missed it, but the Grandson who is 14 has early onset. Enlarged Heart with Mitral Valve leak is a hit and miss affair.

Yes, it’s what I was thinking. It would be curious to know where they live and what’s been at that site.
