Thailand 'not able to stop the spread' of new coronavirus

SUBTITLE: As face masks sell out, people say "information is so hidden" and "we don't know the whole picture".

Subtle changes are seeping into daily life in Bangkok.

Thermal scanners now stand at the doors of luxury malls and attendants pump disinfectant into the hands of visitors as they stream in.

With 14 cases, Thailand now has the highest confirmed number of coronavirus infections outside China and people are starting to worry.

"It's spreading so fast and the information is so hidden, we don't know the whole picture," young mother Cathy told me.

Even her four-year-old son obediently wears a surgical mask.

"I'm worried that I'll get sick and stay in hospital and there isn't a vaccine," commuter Nan added.

Already popular because of pollution, face masks are selling out.

Thailand is a top foreign holiday destination for tourists from Wuhan.

About 22,000 people from the city at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak have visited in January alone.

Six new cases were confirmed today, five of them involving a family from China's Hubei province, and the sixth from Chongqing province.

While all arrivals from China will now be screened and thermal scanned for signs of the disease, the coronavirus is believed to be contagious during the incubation period.

Thus it is feared that while visitors may not have any symptoms, they could in theory be spreading the infection.

That concern is helping to prompt criticism of the government's response to the crisis.

I agree that those masks are largely useless when it comes to preventing you from catching a virus.

But they DO help stop the spread of aerosols when you sneeze and they communicate “I care about you” which is very important in the Asian culture. It’s mostly the latter virtue signaling that drives their usage in Asia.

Good point.

The major vector of SARS to HCWs was their contaminated gear, they got sick from taking it off. Same is true of Ebola.

Conjunctival transmission of the common cold is little remarked on (like, who cares?). It may turn out to be a major factor in this event.

Don’t worry. “It’s just a virus”.

some way to handle the contaminated mask and goggles and...your hair

This nurse in Wuhan found a good way to deal with contaminated hair. This makes it real easy for her to get ready for work and end her shift.

Wuhan nurse shaves head to aid her work against virus
by Zhou Lihua in Wuhan and Cheng Si in Beijing, Chinadaily.com.cn, 2020-01-27

Shan Xia, a 30-year-old nurse with Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, shaved her long hair on Monday to help her work in fighting against the novel coronavirus. Shan, also a mother of two children, said that she cut her hair in order to avoid cross-infection and save time when wearing and taking off protective suits.

I believe it was a weaponized form that accidentally got out from the level 4 Biolab in Wuhan, (where the Chinese scientists illegally sent samples of a Coronavirus from a lab in Canada last year) and that is why the Chinese government is freaking out. No way they would shut down huge sectors of their economy if they didn’t know a lot more than they are telling. Something very wicked this way comes. P aying this will fizzle like some of the other epidemics from there, but we’ve never seen them react like this before. They know.

Accidental. If it was planned and they had the vaccine in place for their own citizens, they wouldn’t be freaking out like they are. It wouldnt have started in China ( much less 20 miles from a level 4 Bioresearch center). Another poster mentioned multiple scenarios where cutting a corner or two in building the lab could allow accidental transfer.

These are beginning to be my thoughts as well. A spontaneous mutation could have happened anywhere. These viruses all seem to start in Guangdong, not Hebei.

It’s just a coinky-dink it got started a few clicks from their BL4 lab. Truly.

Masks alone (of any sort) don’t prevent contracting this virus. Eye protection is also needed. And some way to handle the contaminated mask and goggles (and the rest of your body, clothes, shoes and hair) once you arrive back home.

Can't be repeated enough.

Go here. It looks like the disease has about a 60% mortality.

“...vaccine in place for their own citizens,...”

Well, I’m not sure the ChiComs care too much about their own slaves... Look at what they did to the Tianeman Square people.

In their mind, what’s a few thousand lives versus the “good of the Party”.

Maybe you’re right, though... I just put nothing past that government, ever.

I would think some that are well sealed around the edges or at least one of the full face covers like metal workers use.

Wiping your butt with your hand guarantees they are eventually extinct. Especially if it’s in their food.

Masks like that don’t help with a virus. But they do help with containing droplets from sneezing, etc.

It's all about reducing risk.
