SUBTITLE: As face masks sell out, people say "information is so hidden" and "we don't know the whole picture".
Subtle changes are seeping into daily life in Bangkok.
Thermal scanners now stand at the doors of luxury malls and attendants pump disinfectant into the hands of visitors as they stream in.
With 14 cases, Thailand now has the highest confirmed number of coronavirus infections outside China and people are starting to worry.
"It's spreading so fast and the information is so hidden, we don't know the whole picture," young mother Cathy told me.
Even her four-year-old son obediently wears a surgical mask.
"I'm worried that I'll get sick and stay in hospital and there isn't a vaccine," commuter Nan added.
Already popular because of pollution, face masks are selling out.
Thailand is a top foreign holiday destination for tourists from Wuhan.
About 22,000 people from the city at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak have visited in January alone.
Six new cases were confirmed today, five of them involving a family from China's Hubei province, and the sixth from Chongqing province.
While all arrivals from China will now be screened and thermal scanned for signs of the disease, the coronavirus is believed to be contagious during the incubation period.
Thus it is feared that while visitors may not have any symptoms, they could in theory be spreading the infection.
That concern is helping to prompt criticism of the government's response to the crisis.

Masks like that don’t help with a virus.
Please read this carefully. It’s the top comment on the Zerohedge piece linked here below.
“I just read a German report from Bavaria that they got one confirmed case in isolation. That patient, a German, works at an international factory that has suppliers and sub-factories in China. A lady from Shanghai was on a training week at the factory, without any symptoms, but showed them on the 23rd when she returned to Shanghai. The way she got the virus was from her parents, who are from Wuhan and visited her just before she left for Germany.
“What this shows is that there is most certainly direct human - human transmission during the incubation period, and also how the virus can be easily transmitted from Wuhan - Shanghai - Bavaria or anywhere else in the world. I have been to China and there is no way that the authorities would or could admit the size of the outbreak, especially not during the Lunar New Year, which assures that it will spread much more than during the rest of the year.”
Don’t many of the female commuters in Asian countries wear masks anyway? Hell, I saw a lot of them in Silicon Valley who did, and I am even seeing that now here in central Texas.
On that, I do not have any doubt.
What kind of corona virus is this Wuhan thing? The common cold is from about 100 or so human corona virus and rhino virus strains. There are also a plethora of various animal corona viruses and these are the ones that wreak havoc on us when they change species.
So far Ive heard bat corona virus and snake corona virus. Any other candidates?
Has anyone tried to buy surgical masks lately? If you order from Amazon, the delivery dates are out into the mid February and mid March time frames.
Looks like the Germany story is legit.
And Germany has first-world medical testing and tracking.
I’d imagine the same is happening across the 3rd world unknown.
The first human to human transmission of the Wuhan coronavirus in Europe has been reported in Germany, where a man was infected by a work colleague who had been in China, fuelling anxieties about the potential ease of international spread.
Experts said it was of particular concern that the Chinese woman who originally had the virus apparently had no symptoms when she transmitted it to her colleague. There have been warnings from inside China that people may be infectious before they start to feel ill.
So far there has been very limited spread from China. A handful of countries have reported cases including France, which has three, and the United States, which had five. This is the first reported European case of transmission from one person to another but it has also occurred in Japan, Vietnam and Taiwan.
Every flood starts with a single drop.
In the US, we don’t have family members close enough or that care enough to take in sick relatives’ children. Not to mention who wants to bring potentially sick kids into their homes? Who would take care of their pets, too? Since the virus can go from animal to human, it can also go from human back to animal.
Any discussion on how long the infection lasts? How long does it take to get over it? All I see are infection rates and death rates. How about recovery rates and times...
Maybe Burkas aren't such a bad idea after all.........................

“How a Pandemic could END CIVILIZATION”
(It’s not the disease that’ll kill you, it’s the collapse of the global economy leading to a collapse in food supply and energy infrastructure.)

I was amazed - and I’m not supposed to be amazed by this - at the number and frequency of arrivals from China to the US in just one week.
The French CDC director said yesterday that “It is literally not possible to close the borders”, and that actually may be true.
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
Yeah. If it’s spread to a German who never left Germany, then it’s probably in 20 more countries who don’t have Germany’s level of testing.
From what I recall when the H-1 N-1 virus made its round in 2009 also know as the swine flu virus some one suggested here on FR to use NAC or N-Acetyl Cysteine and to make it work even better along with a healthy dose of buffered C. I have a hunch who ever this person was he may have been associated with the medical profession. I have been taking it ever since with good results as NAC is also a precursor to glutathione one of the most potent anti-oxidants and beneficial for a host conditions. But my main question is will it also be beneficial against this new virus which is circulating? No doubt that there may be a knowledgeable Freeper with a medical background amongst the readers who may possible be able to shed some light on this question. As for myself I do believe that a healthy dose of NAC in combination with buffered ascorbic acid ( C ) certainly can not hurt
Masks alone (of any sort) don’t prevent contracting this virus. Eye protection is also needed. And some way to handle the contaminated mask and goggles (and the rest of your body, clothes, shoes and hair) once you arrive back home.
Badger... those are SHOWER CURTAINS...
Someone remembers you!
