Was Mitt Romney’s vote the fulfillment of a Mormon prophecy?
LA Times ^ | Feb 5, 2020 | RONE TEMPEST

Utahans reacted to Sen. Mitt Romney’s decision to break Republican ranks with a mixture of pride and dismay Wednesday, with some in this majority-Mormon state even suggesting that his vote to remove President Trump from office recalled a prophecy attributed to the church founder Joseph Smith.

Although generally debunked as apocryphal by modern historians, the so-called White Horse Prophecy dates to 1844 when Smith himself was a candidate for president of the United States. The Mormons — members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — have long regarded the U.S. Constitution as a divinely inspired document.

According to the legend, Smith predicted that someday the Constitution would be in extreme danger — hanging “like a thread as fine as silk fiber”— and that a member of the church would ride in on a white horse to save it.

“I think Mitt Romney is under the impression that he is going to be the white horse Republican who will save the country,” said Salt Lake City historian Will Bagley, a frequent critic of the church and its leaders. “Whether or not that would happen is a different matter, but I think if it came down to picking between Mitt Romney and Mike Pence, most people would go with Romney.”

This just reminds me that I didn’t vote for Romney in 2012. I voted against Obama.

I’m a great believer in defensive voting. Even if you don’t like the GOP candidate the RAT is going to be even worse. So there’s no excuse not to get off your duff and vote against the RATs.

Truth to tell, I only voted FOR a presidential candidate three times ... and you get one guess who those were.

Trump did nothing wrong. The president practicing diplomacy isn’t illegal. Asking a foreign leader to see if they can find information on an issue your government is already investigating, isn’t an issue.

and since when is any foreign country entitled to money from us, especially if they won’t respond positively to requests form the leaders of the cojntry giving them the aid?

This alone is reason to stop being the welfare entltiement bank for the rest of the world.

If they are asking for $$$, I don’t join. I’ve already done my share.

I do like your last part. Pelosi knows she’s going to be a crispy critter, might as well enjoy the barbecue.

That’s so romantic. The influx of non-American Europeans during the middle of the 1800s brought some weird stuff.

recalled a prophecy attributed to the church founder Joseph Smith.

yeah, and the angel of the Swamp, Pierre Delecto, shall rise, and spread confusion upon the land. His shadow will cause darkness, and shall only be disbursed when the one called “Donald” will appear and gather the brethren, who will anoint him leader. Pierre Delecto will take up cause with the Satanic kitten named Pelosi, who Delecto will scratch behind the ears.

And Mormons have NEVER claimed Smith had supernatural help as he bolted several miles hauling those “gold plates” all while being assaulted several times.

Romney's vote was for a very obvious reason... James Cofer Black.

In 2005-2008, he was with Blackstone, a CIA military contractor. He resigned amid a scandal involving illegal payments to Iraqi officials.

In 2012, he was Mitt Romney's National Security advisor.

In 2015, he was named to the Board of Directors of Burisma Holdings, a position he still holds... the exact firm at the center of the corruption and extortion and bribery involving the Bidens... and payments to illegal government officials. (And thus he had relevant experience for his Burisma hire, unlike Hunter Biden.)

I'm suuuuuure that's totally coincidental.

“A Moron Prophecy”

You sound like you no longer want this very large conservative base to be part of “your” conservative group.

Would you be happy if we joined the left?

The Constitution's in extreme danger when impeachment is used for political reasons, which Romney is now a party to. They have utterly trivialized the impeachment provisions of the Constitution.

This is what Mormons actually believe:

Detail of Facsimile No. 2 (the Hypocephalus of Sheshonq). Reference numeral 1 represents Kolob according to Joseph Smith. Critics interpret this as an altered figure of a creator god.

The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster has nothing on them...

Romney on Trump March 2016:

” If we Republicans choose Donald Trump as our nominee, the prospects for a safe and prosperous future are greatly diminished. Let me explain why I say that. First on the economy. If Donald Trump’s plans were ever implemented, the country would sink into prolonged recession. A few examples. His proposed 35 percent tariff-like penalties would instigate a trade war and that would raise prices for consumers, kill our export jobs and lead entrepreneurs and businesses of all stripes to flee America.

His tax plan in combination with his refusal to reform entitlements and to honestly address spending would balloon the deficit and the national debt. So even though Donald Trump has offered very few specific economic plans, what little he has said is enough to know that he would be very bad for American workers and for American families. But you say, wait, wait, wait. Isn’t he a huge business success? Doesn’t he know what he’s talking about?

No, he isn’t and no, he doesn’t.”
