Nevada Democrats debut to volunteers new iPad-based ‘tool’ to calculate math on Caucus Day in the wake of Iowa fiasco
The Nevada Independent ^ | 2/8/2020 | Megan Messerly

Asked by a volunteer how results would be transmitted from one place to another, the staffer demurred.

“Those are all excellent questions, and we’re still working out some of the details around those ...” she said.

In interviews, volunteers said they received little information at the training beyond a rough outline of how the tool is supposed to function. They also were unsure how the party plans to carry out its four-day early voting period, which previously relied on the use of an app to capture people’s preferences.

Morrison said that there was “not a bit of proof” at the training that Nevada wouldn’t be another Iowa.

Another volunteer ... said the general sentiment in the room at the training was frustration and confusion.

“We got very little information. It was just a preview. There was no hands on,” the volunteer said. “We were not given the program to work with or practice with. All we have were a few slides to look at while they told us that they’re planning to develop it further.”

Volunteers said they were also not given additional details about how they would properly realign early voters ...

They also expressed concerns that the party is still recruiting caucus volunteers. Volunteers were told that precinct chairs should be prepared to carry out two caucuses at their site if necessary. One volunteer expressed concerns that the people participating in the training didn’t even seem to understand the basic details of how to carry out the caucus process and didn’t know that precinct chairs can’t also be precinct captains on behalf of a campaign.

Nevada Democrats have been working quickly to come up with a new caucus plan after scrapping their plan earlier this week in the wake of the Iowa fiasco.

It's difficult for me to believe that the Dems are proceeding down this path again, a path that's nearly guaranteed to repeat the disaster in Iowa.

the real problem for both states is that the technology is going to have to be run by caucus volunteers that have never seen it before they show up for the caucuses, and most likely have probably never used an app for anything other than watching cat videos anyway, much less an app that requires the entry of relatively complex data, because volunteers at caucuses are generally the same kind of folks who arrange the cookies on the plates for church socials. These are generally very well meaning people but their tech quotient hovers right around zero.

It just blows my mind that the Dems are going to do this again in Nevada, because two nearly identical disasters in a row will totally finish off the credibility of that party ... (not that there's anything wrong with that) ...

remember, you heard it here first ...

The dems need to blame the coming train wreck on something. They would rather blame it on Russia/Trump election interference than admit their own ineptitude.

"because two nearly identical disasters in a row will totally finish off the credibility of that party ..."

This is a party that has followers who believe in Communism, who thought Bush and the government were responsible for 9/11, who believe that 'the science is settled' about climate change, who believed/believe the ridiculous 'dossier', who thought/think Trump is colluding with Putin, who believe that there are numerous genders, who think that Rachel Maddow and the women on the View are beacons of wisdom, etc.

Hard to believe that after all that, anything that happens in the primaries will alter their views.

Keep in mind that Dems use a vote ‘weighted’ system to give People of Color and maybe other minorities a greater say. I think more than raw vote totals have to be sent in.

So why do you need an App to upload the results? How was it done for decades before “smart” phones? At this point it really is either idocracy or disguised fraud...or both.

The first signs of trouble at the Iowa Caucuses came early.

<><> the smartphone app had been ok’ed last fall by Harvard’s Harvard’s “Defending Digital Democracy Project”
to develop strategies and systems to protect results and deal with misinformation.

<><> The Harvard group included “party campaign experts” and experts in
(A) cybersecurity, (B) national security, (C) technology and (D) election administration.

<><> fortuitously, the Harvard group simulated different ways “things could go wrong” on caucus night.

<><> (cue maniacal laugh machine here).

<><> but a simple task like reporting the results began failing last Monday night.

<><> “quick-thinking” Democrat party officials then instructed precinct leaders to move to Plan B:

<><> plan B had precincts call-in results into caucus hdq in Des Moines, to be entered into a secure system by volunteers.

<><> but when volunteers tried to log on, they discovered they needed smartphones to retrieve a code,

<><> the caucus team they had been told NOT to bring phones into the “boiler room” in Des Moines.

<><> a torrent of results were phoned in from gyms, union halls and elsewhere, places that made the Iowa caucuses a world-famous “model of democracy,”

<><> it soon became clear that the whole smart-phone, app process was melting down.

<><> desperate volunteers resorted to passing around a spare iPad to log into the system

<><> other Dems , desperate to verify results, were telling precinct leaders to email photos of worksheets that tallied results — to a dedicated email address.

<><> for hours, no one monitored the inbox; finally opened Tues AM, there were 700 emails with photos sent sideways;

<><> volunteers faced the task of deciphering the handwritten forms.

<><> Iowa Demo Party chair, Troy Price, huddled with other Democrat officials,

<><> alas, no Democrat had a clear strategy to manage the unfolding chaos with exasperated presidential campaigns.

Yes it is, but not many people seem to know the details. That’s how Bernie got thousands more votes but fewer delegates to the next round.

complete bullshit you fabricated on the spot, just like the lies you usually post ... naturally, you won’t be able to post a link proving your lie, because, you know, it’s a lie ...

but these young Dems were taught the new math.

You know, the one where it is not the answer that matters. It is the attempt that is important.

“So why do you need an App to upload the results? How was it done for decades before “smart” phones? At this point it really is either idocracy or disguised fraud...or both.”

the app seems to be mostly designed to do the math involved with the “first” and “second” choices PLUS “fold in” “early caucus voting” ... given the nonsense of “early caucus voting”, sounds like the Nevada caucus system is even more complex than the Iowa ...

btw, the way we “transmitted” our precinct caucus data to county party headquarters, was to DRIVE the tally sheets there, since multiple precinct caucuses were held on the same sites (like school rooms), one driver would delivery multiple tally sheets) ...

but thank goodness in 2018 Colorado voters voted out caucuses for selecting candidates after voters were outraged when they found out that BOTH parties had rigged the caucuses in 2016 ... we still have caucuses, but only to determine who gets on the primary ballots ...
