For generations of future diplomats and cabinet officials educated at Harvards renowned John F. Kennedy School of Government, orientation day has come with a name placard that the students carry from class to class, so their professors can easily call on them.
When Diego Garcia Blum, 30, got his placard last fall, the first-year graduate student immediately took a Sharpie to it, writing He/Him next to the big block letters of his name. Other students did the same thing, writing She/Her and They/Them.
Yup! Day 1, Mr. Garcia Blum, recalled, adding, Thats when I thought, the students are ahead of the school.
But despite its reputation as a bastion of the establishment, the Kennedy School followed the students lead, agreeing to provide clear plastic stickers this semester with four pronoun options that students could apply to their name cards: He/Him, She/Her, They/Them and Ze/Hir.
I think its valuable, generally speaking, to challenge the norm that you can assume a persons gender based on appearances, said Raven Graf, 25, a nonbinary student at Kennedy whose pronouns are they/them.
As young people who have grown up with a more expansive concept of gender identity bring those ideas to college classrooms, universities have responded in varying ways, with some professors and schools quickly accommodating a wider range of gender pronouns, and others struggling over whether and how to institute new policies.
Last week New York University said students would now be able to indicate their pronouns in the system that provides class rosters and seating charts to faculty members. At least 39 other schools allow students to indicate their pronouns on course rosters, according to a national clearinghouse maintained by the director of the University of Massachusetts Amhersts Stonewall Center.

There are very easy ways to avoid problems like that. I had a “HR” problem with a black lesbian female back in the late 90’s. Never again. The problem never has a chance of getting started with me. There is too much recon of employee candidates before they are seen by me to allow that to happen. However, I will overtly discriminate while it is still legal and still defends the values of western civilization.
These indoctrinated Harvard morons will graduate and go to lucrative positions in the government beaurocracy where they will do harmful things to America for decades to come. I’m hopeful that they remain so crippled up with indignation over trivialities that they are unable to do real harm but I have my doubts we’ll be so lucky.
When the mental hospitals were closed fifty years ago, schizophrenia went mainstream in American culture. If Trump gets a second term, the purge must be ruthless and comprehensive.
Kommen Ze Hir? Sounds German to me.
My preferred, “God and Emperor”
I will call others “Heons” and “Sheons” or “Peons” communally
Call me Ishmael.
“I’m not an idiot like ‘they/them’.”
I can understand a woman not wanting to be called "he" and visa versa. I can sort of understand women asking to people to use "those folks" instead of "those guys." But now...self-labeling?
During periods of incredible harshness and statism, the rulers want to eliminate many classes of people. I see that sort of evil lurking in many Dems (no surprise..,they DID give us the Klan). I also believe these Dems don't not really like all this cicgen stuff or minorities or gays etc...just like Putin uses "Christianity" to win over useful idiots, I think these Dems generally use the aforementioned lot as influencers, and violent rabble.
But once these Dems have achieved supreme power...well...at the risk of sounding tin hat-like, I can see why universities encourage this kind of labeling....it helps round up these folks when they're no longer useful......now where have we seen this before?
“Harvards renowned John F. Kennedy School of Government”
Really?
Those losers have an almost unequalled history of failure.
Sorry, but you take away STEM, and Harvard has become just as weak and featureless as any one of the other lib arts fields of mud.
Racist Bill Clinton was not trying to help the black community with that, he was trying to forever hamstring them with poor English skills And quotaed set aside jobs that would keep them from advancement
Well put....
Fountain pen cartridges? Man, are you showing your age!
Back about the 6th or 7th Grade, I somehow acquired a Parker with integral ink bladder and the little lever you used to pump the ink in from the jar that sat in the hole in the top, right corner of your desk.
Geezers,we are!
Hillsdale. Grove City. There must be a few decent colleges left.
LOL...I had someone further up the food chain snicker at me in a good-natured way about having a ballpoint pen on my person at all times...:)
STOP THE INSANITY!
I have to admit...I have gotten to the point I fully embrace my geezerdom...I find it liberating.
I can wear what clothes I want (though, I err on the side of being too formal. I still wear a suit to wakes, funerals, and weddings)
And I say what I want. If people don’t like it because it is politically incorrect, it doesn’t bother me. (I border on using politically incorrect speech to bother people, but most of the time it is because I don’t want people dictating to me what perfectly legitimate words and phrases I should or cannot use which appears to change on a daily basis!)
Heck. Getting old and having your body deteriorate naturally is a bit of a drag, I am not going to make it worse by rejecting my geezerdom! Like those 5% senior citizen discounts, you might as well take them when you can get them!
MY personal pronouns are, “Your Royal Highness”, and “Your Majesty”...............................
I think I will just call them Cousin It’s.
