Global warming causing 'irreversible' mass melting in Antarctica: scientist

SYDNEY - Global warming was leading to an “irreversible” mass melting of the Antarctic ice and purging carbon from the atmosphere was the only solution to slow the process, an Australian climate scientist told Reuters on Wednesday.

Recent human activity has intensified global warming, which could result in a mass melting of Antarctica, said Zoe Thomas, a research fellow at the University of New South Wales who was part of an international team of scientists that recently published a paper on Antarctic ice melting.

The study showed the world could lose most of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, which rests on the seabed and is fringed by floating ice, in a warmer world.

“What we’re seeing with the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, that this starting of the melt, once we reach a certain threshold, will continue despite our efforts to stop it,” she told Reuters.

The team hopes to continue the research to determine how quickly the ice sheets responded to increased temperatures, which would help provide a more concrete time frame for the future.

Thomas said that the only thing that would slow down the ice melting was if economies across the world began de-carbonising themselves.

“Once we commit to this de-carbonised future can then we start thinking about potential options for trying to remove carbon from the atmosphere,” she added.

“Irreversible” means there is nothing we can do about it, so...

The Antarctic undersea volcanoes couldn’t possibly have anything to do with it.

perhaps it is the summer heat melting the ice... perhaps winter will be better for the glaciers.

I’m old enough to remember the last time the ice cap melted.

In 2013.

(According to the BBC anyway).

1 to 2 miles below all of that ice are tree stumps...

The earth was once much warmer.

Perhaps all climate scientists and their believers should immediately stop driving and riding in gas driven vehicles?

Also as a footnote it included the Sahara desert was running out of sand thanks to Climate Change. Will this madness ever end. Are we doomed to an iceless Antarctica with a warm climate? or a sandless desert with nothing as far as the eye can see nothing but bare ground?

Dear Zoe. Please contact grrrrrreta and you can come up with some answers to the following for us:

1. Define the “correct” temperature range for the planet.

2. Define the “correct” humidity range for the planet.

3. Define the “correct” mean sea level for the planet.

4. Define the “correct” amount of precipitation for the planet.

5. Define the “correct” makeup of the atmosphere.

6. Define the “correct” amount of sea ice at the N/S poles.

7. Define/explain past glaciation and subsequent warming without any input from humans.

Adapt or die. Because you can NOT control the weather. One World Order=Pangea.

The oceans would rise hundreds of feet if all of the ice over land melted.

I live right by the ocean on Long Island and they’ve been saying this crap for the past 30 years and the water has not even so much as budged an inch higher than normal discounting storms. By what these guys say all of long island should be under 50 feet of water by now. And another thing: If you go to Manhattan New York city and drive down the FDR drive, when you pass the Brooklyn bridge you’ll reach a point where the land is the lowest and the water the highest from the East river. I mean only a few feet separate the road from the water. If the polar caps are melting why isn’t that southern part of Manhattan island completely under water? It’s been like that at least since the 1700s when those road were created, yet no flooding.

purging carbon from the atmosphere was the only solution to slow the process, an Australian climate scientist told Reuters on Wednesday.

Say what? Wait. Does purging mean the same in Australian as it does in English?

A) If we removed carbon from the atmosphere, where would we put it?

B) What would plants eat?

I’m still confused as to how “carbon” is causing global warming. Also unsure what the “correct” temperature should be, and how a possible fluctuation by a degree or two over many decades is reason to panic.
