BELL, California - Violeta Alvarez is so passionate about Bernie Sanders that she becomes emotional talking about the white, 78-year-old senator from Vermont, a state 3,000 miles from this sun-drenched California enclave.
“This is the first time in my life I’ve seen a presidential candidate reaching out to the city of Bell, this small community,” said Alvarez, a 53-year-old volunteer organizer, pointing to goose bumps breaking out on her arm.
Sanders’ campaign hopes efforts in communities like Bell, a working-class, mainly Latino city of 35,000 people near Los Angeles, could be his path to the Democratic Party’s nomination to take on Republican President Donald Trump in November.
The Sanders campaign says it has prioritized outreach to Hispanic communities that often feel left out of the U.S. political process. Polls suggest that is paying off in important early states with large Latino populations, notably Nevada, which holds its caucuses on Saturday; and Texas and California, where votes are cast on March 3.
In Reno, Nevada on Tuesday, Sanders spoke of his father, who he said arrived in the United States from Poland at age 17, penniless and unable to speak English.
“As the son of an immigrant...I will not tolerate the continued demonization of the undocumented in this country,” Sanders said.

Yup. And a standard pattern is a girlfriend and a kid or two in the US and a wife and kids back home. And those who return home to retire or open a business are often mocked as having become Norteamericano because they complain of the corruption, incompetence, and sloth of their native country.

Residents of City of Bell CA, a few years ago decided that there was a problem with too many drunk drivers who were being stopped by the police which by state law meant the vehicle being impounded at the scene of a DUI, in addition, any traffic stop where the driver had no license, cars would be impounded. There were so many residents loosing their cars to solve the problem, they voted to disband the police department.
Then just this year, the whole state of California Stopped Towing Vehicles of Unlicensed Drivers with a new law meaning that police officers can no longer impound a car at sobriety checkpoints.
Its no coincidence Bernie campaigns for these folks, they all agree with the main democratic policy to lower crime; just abandon / ignore the laws and dismantle law enforcement so there will be no crime by default!
