LOS ANGELES — José cared for the bottle-fed babies, 700 of them in all. He knew a calf was healthy if her eyes were bright and her appetite hearty. Droopy ears were a bad sign. He was attuned to calf coughs.

“His job was to do all things a mom would do to look after her young,” said Mary Kraft, who employed José and his brother, Juan, both undocumented immigrants from Mexico, for a decade at her Quail Ridge Dairy in Colorado.

Then about a year ago, the brothers informed Ms. Kraft that they were returning to Mexico. They had milked the land of opportunity and amassed enough savings to resume their lives back where they had started.

The pair are among a growing number of Mexicans who have been departing the United States in recent years, part of a reverse migration that has helped push the undocumented population to its lowest level in more than 15 years.

New data that will be released on Wednesday by the Center for Migration Studies shows there were 10.6 million immigrants living unlawfully in the United States in 2018 compared with 11.75 million in 2010, a decline propelled primarily by Mexicans returning south.

The issue of illegal immigration has become a centerpiece of the 2020 presidential campaign, as President Trump has stepped up deportations across the interior of the United States and further fortified the southwestern border against unauthorized entry.

Several Democratic candidates have called for decriminalizing border crossings; establishing pathways to citizenship for undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children; and relying on technology, not more fencing, to enforce the border with Mexico. They have also expressed support for focusing deportation resources on removing immigrants who are a threat to public safety or convicted criminals.

If immigration laws are enforced in the U.S. (no mass amnesty), self-deportation may gradually reduce the population of illegal aliens in the U.S.

I know Romney is unpopular here, but he did say in 2012 that his plan for reducing the number of illegal aliens was self-deportation.

That last sentence in particular is crap. The Democrats advocate reducing or even eliminating deportation even of convicted felons. They pitched a fit last year when ICE acted to round up illegals who were already under a court order to be deported.

The Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) passed in 1986 prohibits an employer from knowingly hiring, recruiting, or referring illegal aliens for work in the United States, whether the individual is in the country illegally or because their immigration and residency status does not allow employment. The law also extends to employers who discover that an employee is an illegal alien after hiring.

Actually, Trump's policies is helping to make Mexico great again. Our company opened a new plant in Tijuana last spring and were initially unable to staff it properly. After the trade agreement was signed late last year, we are finally getting enough workers to keep the place running.

The central American "migrants" who were authorized to work in Mexico, weren't much interested in taking these jobs (nor qualified), whereas the Mexicans are.

I'd expect that other companies are having similar experiences and work in the U.S., while still attractive, is less so with the double whammy of stepped up enforcement and more job opportunities in Mexico.

A seldom discussed aspect of illegal immigration is how it hurts the exporting country by driving out the very workers they need to build their own growing economy. Eisenhower's famous and highly successful "Operation Wetback" (1954-5) was initially launched by a request from Mexico to get some of their own workers back who had gone north to augment the labor shortages of World War II and did not want to return home.

I suspect what we’re dealing with here is the NYT’s standards of political correctness.

In this case: Avoid any appearance of picking on people of color by lumping some European immigrants in among the unassimilable foreigners.

Painful as this may sound to my fellow conservatives, any Third World immigration is bad for what historically has been a white, Christian nation. Some cultures are just going to have a hard time mixing with ours.

It was hard enough assimilating the Irish, Italian, and other Catholics into a Protestant culture. The fact that they were is testament to the resilience of that culture.

But our culture is like a balloon — it can only stretch so far before it pops.
