'Walking a very thin line': Why coronavirus could hit small businesses the hardest

Keeping the U.S. economy on its feet as coronavirus pervades American borders is up to consumers and how much they’re willing to go out and spend, especially at small and midsize businesses, supply chain management expert Hitendra Chaturvedi says.

Chaturvedi, a professor at Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business, said he’s not worried about major U.S. firms’ resilience to partial, or even full-year profit flatlines, and instead sees protecting smaller companies as key.

“Small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) that are the heart and soul of this country are the ones that are going to be the hardest hit,” Chaturvedi told Yahoo Finance on Friday. “Even when things improve, they’re walking a very thin line here.

An example of the total BS that is being put out as "Business" news(propaganda). PROPAGANDA DESIGNED TO CREATE A FAKE NARRATIVE AND A REAL RECESSION.

We import $500B/year from China and MOST OF IT IS FINISH DURABLE GOODS. The amount of Chines imports that are really sub components of US produced goods and not compete items for sale is maybe 10% or $50B/yr which about $4B/month. This is COMPARED TO A $22T/year US economy.

A tempest in a tea pot.

86% of the US economy has nothing to do with trade. Only 16% is at some slight "risk" form the COVID "pandemic". Not much of a risk really.

This is pure BS scare tactics trying to talk down our economy and hurt Trump. The threat is tiny and being blown all out of proportion by the Business Media ( BM - Bowel Movement ) media.

We don’t need trading partners. If “they” are that concerned, close the borders and protect our citizens by limiting exposures/possible exposures.

I tried to read through an article informing us that open borders were the best way to protect ourselves exposure. Insanity.

A tempest in a tea pot.

Yeah, a real tempest...when they start cancelling fairs and festivals, we will be totally without a way to make a living. I won’t tell you how much we will loose, except it will be 100% of our yearly income. There are thousands of people just like us around the country...small business...table top capitalism... We are keeping our fingers crossed, but the news is not good.

Now we can’t get any help from the government because we are self employed. So now what? become wards of the state? Homeless? Pitch a tent in SF?

This is propaganda with one goal, to crash the market, the economy and to cause an unnecessary recession. But why? To hurt Trump.

What are you talking about? What fair? PS: Republicans do not feel bad when people lose their jobs, it's just business. Well unless you are a noble and brave farmer, then it is a national tragedy. /sarc

They have totally succeeded in scaring the intelligence out of Wall Street, and now they are bearing down on the low hanging fruit - the small business community.

I think the more we learn about it, we are starting to realize that while the ride will be a bit bumpy, it’s not going to be as cataclysmic as some feared.

We do fairs up and down the west coast...We are to head to AZ in a couple of weeks...up through California, Oregon and many fairs in WA state... ugh...

We used to do more than 25 fairs a year...its cut down to some 15 or so. WA State fair lasts nearly a month...that is a chunk of change...

I run a company in the middle of this sector. Most of the product we distribute either comes wholly from China or is made with Chinese sub assemblies. We just distribute, not manufacture - the top-selling brands in our segments. Even a slight delay in the supply chain causes serious problems for cash flow, ability to keep people employed, paying vendors, etc. Yes, many of these manufacturers are trying to move away from China (starting with the tariff uncertainty of 2019) but that is a multi-year process. Read about the lack of infrastructure in places like Viet Nam or India that Apple and other have encountered as they are moving some of their capacity out of China.

We can certainly sit here and say “told ya so” but that doesn’t change where we are today.

Ok what is it you sell or re-sell? Compared to the $22T US economy how much value is really lost?

I sincerely hope this doesn’t hurt you too bad. I admire you and your dedication to American capitalism. We are retired and doing okay so my focus is on the market. If you ever bring your business to NE Florida (Jacksonville area) let us FReepers know. We are getting in to the season for numerous art festivals here and Id love to buy from you if they are your kind of market. I think there are a lot of freepers in this area. All the best.
