The Texas Democratic Party filed a lawsuit Thursday to block a state law that will end straight-ticket voting beginning with the general election in November.
The federal lawsuit, filed in Laredo, argues that the law will be a disaster for Texas elections, worsening waiting times at polling sites and disproportionately affecting Latino and African American voters, who tend to live in urban areas with long ballots that require more time to fill out.
As a result, already lengthy polling-place lines will grow, the suit says...
...More Democrats than Republicans tend to vote by straight ticket in the states larger counties...
Without the option of voting straight-ticket, the excessive length of Texas ballots creates a significant risk that voters will fail to cast votes in every down-ballot race, the lawsuit says...
...The lawsuit was the fourth filed by Texas Democrats in recent months to challenge voting-related laws and rules in the state. The other three are:
- A January lawsuit seeks to block a state rule that bans electronic signatures on voter registration forms, leading to the rejection of more than 2,400 applications days before the registration deadline for the 2018 midterm elections.
- A challenge filed in November seeks to overturn a longtime state law requiring that candidates belonging to the governors political party be listed first on general election ballots. Democrats say the law gives an unfair, arbitrary and artificial advantage to Republicans, the party of Gov. Greg Abbott, in every contested national, state and local race on the ballot.
- An October lawsuit seeks to overturn a GOP-backed state law that banned mobile voting sites during early voting periods. The law requires polling locations to be open on every day of early voting.

2017 law, they wait until 2020 to file suit.
NC Republicans did away with straight ticket voting and it gave us a liberal Supreme Court
This is stupid on its face.
Could just increase the Trump coattails this time.
I suspect it’s because with a few exceptions the 2018 and 2019 elections went even worse for them than they expected. Most of the exceptions were Republican candidates that ran poor campaigns or were poor candidates to begin with. I suspect they anticipate losing even more offices because their voter base is too stupid to remember to vote in all the positions.
IOW ... the Dems prefer voters that dont educate themselves on candidates and issues. Straight party voting caters to that simple-minded crowd.
the change to the ballot itself starts this year.
They swept Rat judges into Houston via straight party voting in 2018.
too much to expect paid rat voters to tick of each 80 offices including judges.
As a Texan with George P Bush being Land Commissioner I never get to vote straight Republican.
Yup, but they did far worse than they had expected in other offices. It doesn’t hurt that the state GOP often doesn’t run candidates for judgeships and the Rats run unopposed.
100,000 straight party votes in Houston tossed out top level judges in Houston for millennial carpetbaggers.

if a judgeship is unopposed, straight ticket or not isn’t going to change that
Harris County got a terrible, unqualified County Judge due to ‘Rats straight-ticket voting. She was terrible addressing the Coronavirus concerns yesterday on TV. She appeared to be not up to speed on Coronavirus. First thing she wants to do is raise taxes.
They know they can’t win but they’re going for an injunction for the 2020 general election. Watch for the judge’s name. She’s not an American but a naturalized meskin from Nuevo Laredo appointed by Barry Soetero.
Marina Garcia Marmolejo
This year you could because George P. is not up for reelection.
Could just increase the Trump coattails this time.
I cant imagine any other reason they would want to fight this.
Republicans voted for Abbott who won like 60/40 and not for Cruz who almost lost to that weird Irish fake Latino guy
Dems were fine with that.
