There was a record increase in the number of infections detected in the past 24 hours, while 589 patients have recovered, Italian health officials stated on Saturday. Here's the latest news.
The death toll from the outbreak of coronavirus in Italy rose to 233 on Saturday, up from 197 on Friday.
The increase of 35 was lower than in the previous two days, marking a slight slowdown in the number of fatalities being reported in the country.
The number of cases in the country however shows no sign of slowing, with more than 1,000 new cases confirmed in the past 24 hours, the Civil Protection Agency stated.
The number of infections shot up by a single-day record of 1,247 to hit 5,883 in total.
The head of the agency, Angelo Borrelli, told a news conference said of those originally infected, 589 had fully recovered while 567 were being treated in intensive care.
This means there are currently 5,061 active cases in Italy.
Italy has recorded the most deaths of any country outside China and the third-most infections after China and South Korea.
While Italy's coronavirus fatality rate is estimated at around 3.8 percent of confirmed cases, experts warn there may be an unknown number of undetected cases.
All of Italy's 20 regions are affected as of Thursday, with the data showing the virus had reached the Aosta Valley on the French border.
The Vatican City also reported its first case on Friday.
Italy's civil protection service also revealed that the northern Lombardy region around Milan that has seen well over half of all infections had started "experiencing difficulties with the (number of) beds available in hospitals".
"We have beds available in other regions to help Lombardy," Borrelli told reporters.
The Italian government has been watching closely to see if

No. One day does not make a trend, especially when the total cases are still rising. Check back in a week.

NEW: Italy will issue a decree later tonight with new measures to stop coronavirus, according to Reuters. Local media says new areas will be put on lockdown.
and yet the flights keep landing here
STOP THE FLIGHTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(screaming for 2 weeks)
Maybe Trump’s political opponents never even thought of using this coronavirus scare as a way to prevent his reelection.
Where did it start there?
If they have this many known cases probably several times that unknown
Which is good they are asymptomatic
Bad they are carrying it around like a Mary
I watched an interview last night on tube with several folks positive and no symptoms
Flu does this too....everyone doesnt manifest as sick
The day is young...
It's no worse than the common cold ping...Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
Back of napkin fatality rate of those admitted to hospital:
Yesterday 38% (197 deaths and 523 recovered)
Today 40% (233 deaths and 589 recovered)
Looks like the fatality rate is increasing to me. Maybe due to hospitals becoming overwhelmed?
38 to 40 means nothing, just noise.
In other news; about 3000 future Americans died yesterday.
The cause was determined to be CHOICE.
Cross your fingers.
The Covid Cult demands nothing but more deaths to assuage their hearts.
Hopefully some good Italians will meet the meed.
Possibly, as any issue with daily reporting could easily contribute to that discrepancy. However, a 2 out of 5 death rate, for Italians admitted to hospital due to the wuhan virus, is alarming.
Hey Wardaddy,
Can you post a link to that video? I’d like to see it, if you remember the name or bookmarked it. Thank you!

Can’t the Pope do something about this?
Yes, we need a series of days to make better projections. 92% of Italians are related by blood. They may be more prone to catching the disease from a genetic factor, like the Chinese.
I’m half Italian so it’s something I think about. The regular flu is still much more of a problem, we are just used it so it’s not big news anymore.
He’s not doing any big public events.
Which is OK because few want to listen to him anyway.
What will ultimately devastate America is the stupidity of people who will help deliver (knowingly/unknowingly) the virus and the gears of our society and levels of infastructure will slowly grind down.
Many are now saying the overall rate is 3.4%. My SWAC (scientific wild ass calculation), it's closer to 5%.
I think the below, which uses CDC data too, is probably pretty accurate and breaks down the numbers by age group, of which the rates vary greatly.
Wash them hands!
