Commentary: Rod Blagojevich: Gov. Pritzker should call a virtual legislative session to help Illinois workers through coronavirus crisis
The Chicago Tribune ^ | March 19, 2020 | Rod Blagojevich

I am urging Gov. J.B. Pritzker to immediately call the Illinois General Assembly back to work for the purpose of extending emergency paid sick leave to all public and private sector workers forced into precautionary or mandatory quarantine due to the coronavirus pandemic and to suspend mortgage payments.

The Illinois Constitution gives to the governor the constitutional power to call the legislature back into special legislative session anytime he or she sees fit. In this time of a worldwide pandemic, Gov. Pritzker should wait no longer and immediately exercise that power by calling the Illinois General Assembly back to work. Tens of thousands of working people who have suddenly found themselves without a paycheck due to the economic dislocation caused by the coronavirus need help now.

Last week, the Illinois General Assembly canceled session for fears of the spread of the coronavirus. Since that time, Gov. Pritzker has ordered the closing of dine-in restaurants and bars in the state of Illinois, thereby causing thousands of people to be unable to work. It is time for the governor and the lawmakers to help those workers.

We are living in extraordinary times that call for extraordinary measures. There’s no time to lose. What are Gov. Pritzker and the lawmakers waiting for? The working people of Illinois need help now.

(Rod Blagojevich served as the governor of Illinois from 2003 to 2009. He returned to public life in February after President Donald Trump commuted his prison sentence.)

Will Pritzker rejected advice from one of his former political best buddies? After all, they used to spend hours on the FBI wiretapped telephones together and Jabba donated tens of thousands of dollars to Blago over the years.

The legislators have canceled numerous committee meetings and session days since the crisis began while Congress continued to meet.

Virtually every state legislature should be meeting to invent ways to ease the pain on business and private citizens in their state.

If I owned a business in Ill or Cal, and could see zero effort going on, and all this pain dumped on me to solve...the first solution would be to take the business and leave the state.

Blago would be better served keeping his yap shut. He’s lucky he’s not still behind bars.
