Spanish soldiers deployed to help fight the new coronavirus outbreak have found elderly patients abandoned, and sometimes dead, at retirement homes, as an ice rink inside a Madrid shopping mall was turned into a temporary morgue to cope with a surge in cases.
The army has been charged with helping to disinfect retirement homes in Spain, one of the countries worst hit by the pandemic. Dozens of deaths from COVID-19 have been recorded at facilities across the country.
"We are going to be strict and inflexible when dealing with the way old people are treated in these residences," Defence Minister Margarita Robles said in an interview with private television channel Telecinco.
"The army, during certain visits, found some old people completely abandoned, sometimes even dead in their beds," she added.
An investigation has been launched, the general prosecutor announced.
Under coronavirus protocols, health workers have been instructed to leave bodies in place in suspected COVID-19 deaths until the arrival of a doctor. But given the upsurge in deaths the delay can be lengthy.

Panic behavior in an epidemic. Reprehensible.
It’s the 2003 European heatwave all over again.
There was no epidemic in 2003.
Just the same despicable behavior.
Famine, pestilence, earthquakes, and war.
Funny, don’t recall any of those ravaging the continent in 2003....
Flying planes into buildings was an act of war. Politics mucked up our response to that.
Part of this story, which is still developing....a lot of older Spaniards lived in retirement ‘homes’, which had eastern Europeans mostly as the workers (the under-paid folks). When the virus started to hit a month ago, with travel restrictions starting to be discussed...these people packed up and left. So when you had five or six people on a shift to handle retirees....that soon became one person, who couldn’t handle the mess.
I don’t think anyone much will discuss this in public, but it’s one of the band-aides that Europeans have used to float the older retiree issues.
Remember Katrina when old folks in New Orleans nursing homes were left to drown?
SadBring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
The false positive rate was 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's or one old farts life, it's worth it.
Socialism = NO respect for LIFE, from Pre-Birth through Infirmity, stages where we’re both helpless to the cruelty of Mother Government and her minions. :(
Scary how easily America has embraced Infanticide - how far behind can abandoning our elderly and infirm be? (Terri Schaivo, Anyone?)
Save a bullet for yourself.
Your constant posting of this vile meme is disgusting and reprehensible. Making a joke of human suffering. You are despicable.
That’s a PC comment. We don’t do that here.
I’m sorry.
Life in prison.
No parole. Ever.
For the people that did this.
I would settle for exile. I dont even want to feed or house them. Let them make their own way in the world. It is what they have at attempted to do to us.
It is disgusting but perhaps people should be reminded of what an epidemic does. Many, even here dont want to recognize we are IN an epidemic.
Or better yet....a war zone.

I understand that africa is under a flood of locusts.
that will finish off europe.
Lets stick with epidemic until we have to start making battlefield decisions in the ERs. Then it really will be war. That could begin happening soon. Lets pray that panic behavior can be stamped out, by Authority, if need be and we can avoid that.
I'm not the sharpest crayon in the box, but how does parts of Africa buried under a sea of locusts kill off Europe?
