Doctors Are Hoarding Unproven Coronavirus Medicine by Writing Prescriptions for Themselves and Their Families

A nationwide shortage of two drugs touted as possible treatments for the coronavirus is being driven in part by doctors inappropriately prescribing the medicines for family, friends and themselves, according to pharmacists and state regulators.

“It’s disgraceful, is what it is,” said Garth Reynolds, executive director of the Illinois Pharmacists Association, which started getting calls and emails Saturday from members saying they were receiving questionable prescriptions. “And completely selfish.”

Reynolds said the Illinois Pharmacists Association has started reaching out to pharmacists and medical groups throughout the state to urge doctors, nurses and physician assistants not to write prescriptions for themselves and those close to them.

“We even had a couple of examples of prescribers trying to say that the individual they were calling in for had rheumatoid arthritis,” he said, explaining that pharmacists suspected that wasn’t true. “I mean, that’s fraud.”

I’m sure it’s not tons....but a small office supply. And Doctors are afterall first responders....and they should have access to these drugs.

Don’t care.

They should protect themselves and their families so they can live to protect us...

I see a bright spot here in that it clearly shows that those on the “applied science” end of the medical spectrum have confidence that these drugs work, while the theoreticians want to fiddle for several months while everything burns.

Prosecute for what? Putting ppe on daily and wanting a med for your family if you bring something home that could kill them?
The course in one protocol is only 12 pills. That’s not hoarding. Now if they are buying 100s at a time that’s different.

It is actually unethical. It’s the reason doctors (used to) take an oath to treat the family of fellow physicians for free and train their offspring for free. In the good old days before the lawyers decided they should be the arbiters of what doctors can do.

Disagree completely. They are prescribing for their friends and family “just in case.” It’s immoral.

They SHOULD be writing lots of prescriptions — for themselves, their families, their nurses, hospital disinfection staff, pulmonary specialists, EMTs, firemen, paramedics, hospital administration staff. These are the people on the front line and we need all of them to stay healthy and get well quick if they catch it.

Why do they need to protect their friends? Prescribe them if and when they get the virus, not “just in case.”

-—when Viagra first became available, my lady doctor confided in me that the doctors were keeping all of the free samples for themselves, too-—

One doctor wanted 200 pills. That’s beyond hoarding.

Dittos!

I see a bright spot here in that it clearly shows that those on the “applied science” end of the medical spectrum have confidence that these drugs work, while the theoreticians want to fiddle for several months while everything burns.

The guys and gals on the front lines of medicine get paid financially and ego wise when they save the lives of their patient.

The tinkers get paid to fiddle for months while people die and get an autopsy.

I’d wager the hoarders are mostly foreign born.

Fakenews

The supply of hydroxychloroquine which has been in use for seventy years is to vast to be hoarded.

India is giving this prophylactically to their first responders and IIRC their immediate families.

Not hoarding to do so. We NEED doctors.

politicians on the other hand...

Do these people ever see the conflict between the statements “doctors are hoarding ... for themselves and their families” and “unproven”? IF it’s snake oil, why treat their kids with it?

Why wouldn’t they? Everyone has said this virus is a killer and it’s every man for himself.
