The Israeli Health Ministry is preparing to use a new medication that is still in the research stage and not yet approved as a treatment on patients afflicted with COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.
The unapproved drug is a mix of lopinavir and ritonavir and is manufactured by American biopharmaceutical firm AbbVie. The combination of the two is approved for the treatment of HIV (AIDS) but it is not yet known if the same ratios of the two drugs will be used for the treatment of COVID-19. The HIV medication is marketed and sold under the brand name Kaletra.
Israeli Attorney General Avichai Mendelblit approved the use of a generic version of the drug to treat coronavirus patients in Israel. He also suggested that the drug chloroquine, normally used to treat malaria victims, be used alone or as a combination with the other drugs.

Which now gives me pause if that ER Doctors report of treatment protocol from a New Orleans Hospital is legit. He claimed it didn’t help.....Hummmm. I suppose being an ER Doctor he was seeing the worst of the worst and possibly the Chloroquine is most effective when used early in the cycle.

It took Dr. Trump to galvanize the glacially slow FDA to bring to fruition over 10 years of diligent study of hydroxychloroquine.
Many, many studies over the years have proved HCQ's efficacy in dealing with viral infections and surpressing the bad effects of the body's out-of-control immune system.

Politico had to use the “despite scant evidence” bit just to be Politico - but many stories out there no showing the use of the drug is growing exponentially - one wouldn’t expect this unless there was more than just some anecdotal tales of success...there must be something to it.

Gilead is a USA biotech company.
“The media is rooting for this drug to fail. No surprise since they want this President to fail and ultimately the county to fail.”
Every drug, including over the counter drugs, can produce a negative, even deadly reaction, in a small portion of the population. I guarantee that the media will focus upon the person who dies from hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine, rather than the thousands who may be saved.

You are right. Can’t expect 100% success yet but maybe coming down the pipe in clinical testing.
What the doctors needed was a standard ‘first line of defense’ drug(s) that they could give right away. This HCQ/Zpack with zinc and maybe high dose vitC now fits the bill. It’s working in many cases. People who recovered who had been on vents say they could suddenly breathe better. They thought they weren’t going to live the night and they recovered.
If plan A (HCQ/Zpack) doesn’t work then move to plan B (say remdesivir) or plan C or plan D. Suddenly there’s a protocol and maybe light in a very dark tunnel for coronavirus patients.

Secondly there is a pretty sure possibility that hydroxy-chloroquine acts as an prophylaxis, taking 1 x 200 mg HCQ per day along with a 200 gram Zinc supplement.Almost all of the front line doctors in NYC are doing this, so why not everybody. We soon will have enough HCQ to do that.

To all medical professionals around the world:
My name is Dr. Zev Zelenko and I practice medicine in Monroe, NY. For the last 16 years, I have cared for approximately 75% of the adult population of Kiryas Joel, which is a very close knit community of approximately 35,000 people in which the infection spread rapidly and unchecked prior to the imposition of social distancing.
As of today my team has tested approximately 200 people from this community for Covid-19, and 65% of the results have been positive. If extrapolated to the entire community, that means more than 20,000 people are infected at the present time. Of this group, I estimate that there are 1500 patients who are in the high-risk category (i.e. >60, immunocompromised, comorbidities, etc).
Given the urgency of the situation, I developed the following treatment protocol in the pre-hospital setting and have seen only positive results:
1. Any patient with shortness of breath regardless of age is treated.
2. Any patient in the high-risk category even with just mild symptoms is treated.
3. Young, healthy and low risk patients even with symptoms are not treated (unless their circumstances change and they fall into category 1 or 2).
My out-patient treatment regimen is as follows:
1. Hydroxychloroquine 200mg twice a day for 5 days
2. Azithromycin 500mg once a day for 5 days
3. Zinc sulfate 220mg once a day for 5 days
The rationale for my treatment plan is as follows. I combined the data available from China and South Korea with the recent study published from France (sites available on request). We know that hydroxychloroquine helps Zinc enter the cell. We know that Zinc slows viral replication within the cell. Regarding the use of azithromycin, I postulate it prevents secondary bacterial infections. These three drugs are well known and usually well tolerated, hence the risk to the patient is low.
Since last Thursday, my team has treated approximately 350 patients in Kiryas Joel and another 150 patients in other areas of New York with the above regimen.
Of this group and the information provided to me by affiliated medical teams, we have had ZERO deaths, ZERO hospitalizations, and ZERO intubations. In addition, I have not heard of any negative side effects other than approximately 10% of patients with temporary nausea and diarrhea.
In sum, my urgent recommendation is to initiate treatment in the outpatient setting as soon as possible in accordance with the above. Based on my direct experience, it prevents acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), prevents the need for hospitalization and saves lives.
