Hundreds of stranded Americans left Nepal on a repatriation flight Tuesday, days after a complete lockdown was imposed in the Himalayan nation to help fight the coronavirus.
A Qatar Airways flight arranged by the U.S. government flew 302 Americans from Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport to Washington, D.C. The elderly, families with children and people with a medical condition were given priority on the flight.
The U.S. Embassy in Nepal estimates that 3,000 to 4,000 Americans are still in the country but says not all of them are seeking to leave. Plans for future flights to evacuate more of the Americans were unclear.

Nepal has 5 total known cases. I may have chosen to stay there.
This does not seem smart to me. Why would someone leave an area with relatively little Covid and fly through some of the worst infected countries to reach the #1 Covid country? I can understand travel if you have an important appointment like a cancer follow-up check-up. But otherwise, why wouldn’t you just be a bit of recluse in a fairly secluded area?

Why would anyone go to Nepal other than mountaineering or for the hashish? I would like to see it yes, but it’s surprising so many Americans there.

I haven’t researched the Nepalese government’s position, but in Indonesia, if you’re locked down and the visa expires, you wait. They have said the penalty fees will be waived. Out of money? Hmmmm. That seems a good reason. Job and romance? Aren’t the jobs shut down in the US? Romance? He won’t wait? Dump him then.
There are a few good reasons for traveling but really, it is probably safer in Nepal.
I mostly agree with you, but I could see how some might see it differently, and want to get back to home base.

you don’t want to be in a third world country during a epidemic. it might not be there right now but all it takes is one person being sick and spreading it for the virus to hit that country. with the country having as few resources as it has getting sick there would be real bad. who do you think the country will take care of first with its limited resources.
How did they escape if it was locked down? Did they tunnel out from under the wall?
