Spain To Roll Out Permanent Universal Basic Income ‘Soon’
Forbes ^ | Apr 6, 2020 | Isabel Togoh

Spain, which has the biggest cluster of COVID-19 infections outside the U.S., will introduce universal basic income “as soon as possible” as part of its efforts to combat the economic effects of coronavirus, Economy Minister Nadia Calvino said on Sunday. Critically, the scheme is expected to be rolled out indefinitely.

The move has been prompted by the coronavirus crisis, but Calvino told Spanish channel La Sexta that the measure, once rolled out, will remain after the pandemic is finally over.

No date was given for the rollout, but Calvino assured that the measure will be launched as soon as possible, and that the government is working out the details.

It is not yet known what the amount would be, but it is expected to be geared toward families and complement other social security measures pledged by the Spanish government, to support the population through the crisis.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s government rolled out a €200 billion package ($216 billion) last month to boost Spain’s economy, in line with stimulus packages introduced in some of the worst-hit countries.

Depends on how high it is. $100 per year wouldn’t do much.

the definition of lunacy is trying something that has always failed, thinking it will be different this time- doing something over and over again expecting different results each time-

hope ya got a back up plan Spain- hope ya got some money squirreled away somewhere- you’re gonna need it when your country goes broke-

UBI is a bad idea under any circumstances. But it would be interesting to embed in the law that, if the number of immigrants in the country were to rise above X, then UBI would immediately stop.

From a political standpoint, you’d pretty much guarantee that the entire population would oppose immigration.

Finland tested the idea on a limited number of people. About nine months into the 12-month test, the government ‘failed’ it. There were anticipated feelings that individuals would take the money and improve their lives...but there was no evidence to show that.

“you’d pretty much guarantee that the entire population would oppose immigration.”

Or cease to care as long as they’re getting theirs. ANY type of monthly paycheck breeds complacency.

And prices will just increase commensurate with the extra money being pumped into the system. We’ve seen this movie before, many times.

Watching the Spanish show up every night at 9pm and drink until 4.
It always made you wonder...”Who in this country actually gets any work done?”

No one I’d guess.

At least Finland was wise enough to test it on a small sample.
Spain already has a huge population who does NOTHING other than party.
Paying them to party seems like a really BAD idea.

Spain about to go down the drain....

The pain in Spain is easy to explain. The main refrain is to spend insane. All in vain.

Same with liberal ideas about short work days/hours freeing people to create art and literature - when all it would do in today's society is increase inane social media postings by 80%. :)

Their expectations were too high. Of all the things we could spend money on this is pretty low on my list.
