This Is Strange: Total US Deaths in March 2020 are Actually Down 15% from Average of Prior Four Years

Grassfire reports:

"According to data obtained from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics Mortality Surveillance System website, total U.S. deaths for the first three weeks of March are DOWN 10% from the average of the prior four years for the same three week period.

The average for weeks 9 through 11 for the four prior years was a total of 170,555 deaths. For weeks 9 through 11 this year, the total is 153,015, meaning 17,540 fewer people died in America during the first three weeks of March than could be reasonably expected. And the gap between historic deaths and weekly deaths is widening. For week 11, just 47,655 Americans died, 8,773 and 15% fewer than the average for week 11 in the prior four years. And while data on week 12 is not complete, it is trending similar to week 11 and will likely be down by 15% (around 8,700 deaths less than expected) even though 1,919 COVID-19 deaths were reported (in week beginning 3/22)."

Now after deaths for the entire month of March are reported, the results show that deaths in the US this March are 15% less than the average of the past four years!

The number we have been needing is one that is not subject to fudging or finagling. During the Spanish Flu in 1918 they used a calculation called excess deaths to determine what number of deaths could be laid directly at the feet of the disease. No assumptions, no hair-splitting, just simple arithmetic. (This is my first post ever. Please be nice. Thanks.)

Because deaths go down in economic downturns, although less eating out cannot hurt.

Thanks for posting March. I think the trend may continue in April. Also numbers from later this year will show a drop due to any premature mortality now.

Social separation over-achieves on many factors.

I was just asking about this very thing. Thanks. Since deaths are down, not up, can we ease up on this madness now?

That's likely a big one. Also people who are ill but afraid to go to the hospital and be exposed to coronavirus so they don't get exposed to the 378 other deadly bugs floating around in there. Similar things have happened in Israel during doctors strikes.

Everyone and everything is in a holding pattern right now, including the grim reaper.

Isolation means less transmission of all diseases and less driving and other risky behavior. It is a dangerous thing to leave home.

Fewer people on the roads driving is probably the biggest reason. And not many people working, either. Chicago thugs may even have slowed down the number of shootings out of fear they are more susceptible to getting sick. The number of illegals crossing the border has dropped as well. And, to a smaller degree, people not passing around other communicable diseases.

Hmmm.., instead of EXCESS DEATHS it appears we’re facing a DEATH DEFICIT. Mein Gott, what are we going to do to get our deaths back!

Good first post. ;-).

No one driving. College kids not drinking themselves to death.

I find it interesting that heart related deaths have declined...a lot. I guess not having to sit next to that jerk in the office does have health benefits. Ha ha.
