BIRMINGHAM, Ala. A Shelby County barbershop owner vowed Wednesday to reopen his store in defiance of state health orders setting up the first potential challenge to the measures put in place by Alabama officials to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Scott Farr announced on Tuesday he planned to reopen The Male Room on Friday on a limited basis with social distancing measures in place. Hair stylists who volunteered to return to work would have their temperatures taken daily and would be given face masks. Customers would only be served by appointment and be expected to wait in the parking lot.
"It's been a good business for 12 years and I hate to see it destroyed essentially. So we're taking action," said Farr.
Barbershops are explicitly mentioned as close-contact service providers who were ordered by the Alabama Department of Public Health to stay closed through April 17th. The order impacting barbershops and other businesses was extended to April 30th when Governor Kay Ivey issued a Stay at Home Order.
Farr said he is willing to go to jail to keep his business open but such an outcome seems unlikely. Violating the health order is misdemeanor charge and which can lead to a fine of up to $500. The fine can be issued for each day in violation of the order. Farr said police have reached out to him asking him to reconsider.
"I'm fully aware of the risk that I'm taking. I've thought it through completely. I'm not taking it lightly."
On Wednesday, the Alabama Department of Public Health announced the state had surpassed 4,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus including 122 reported fatalities. Public health experts have urged the practice of social distancing to curb the growing number of cases. Farr said he takes the virus seriously and understands the need to protect those more susceptible to the virus. He argued the definition of essential businesses allowed under state orders is arbitrary.
'Well walking outside your door is dangerous. We have the option everyday to wrap ourselves in bubble wrap and hang around in the basement," said Farr when asked if he though his decision was potentially dangerous, 'There's a pretty good chance we're going to make it to the end of the day."
SOMEones gotta cut those man buns.
My barber has a chair set up at home, and he cut my hair Monday. I call him a “bootleg barber.”
Jeepers. This place is monitored like a Trump phone call. Some Karen is no doubt looking into exactly who this rogue barber is.
Ha! Good work lol

Keep a list of known or suspect Karens.
Nextdoor and Facebook have probably done most of the detective work.
People are already working on the sly. This will grow more and more. You will know this happening by you and me seeing increased day time automobile traffic and increased gasoline sales
Ditto.
My barber (lady) has her shop across the street from my PO Box.
Drove by one day and the “Open” light was on. “OK, I’ll get it tomorrow”. And of course she was closed.
I can volunteer as a stand in for the Cousin Itt pic.
Sigh.
The mayor of Chicago closed everything down then went and got a haircut, violating her own edict. The rules don’t apply to her.
If our rulers aren't careful they'll create an underground economy.

This patriot needs an Alabama attorney who will live up to his oath to defend the Constitution. Step up!
