In the Holocaust, human beings minding their own business got treated like something much worse than a combination of smallpox and an infestation of cockroaches, deserving utter extermination, executed meticulously, with extraordinary malice. That, and its scale, made it exceptional.

That being said, thinking that what happened in Germany was a uniquely German phenomenon is naive. It starts by treating some people as other than human or less human than you, and descends from there. Ignoring a person’s inherent rights dehumanizes them, and puts you on that damnable road.
