Remember, it was California that tried to ban both lever action rifles and semi-autos back around 1989. So much opposition was raised, the lever action ban was removed from the law, and the law shelved.
Then the state released Pat Purdy from a mental institution, allowed him to buy a handgun, passing the background check and waiting period, and an AK-47/s rifle in Oregon.
He then shot up the Stockton school, then shot himself.
The shelved AW ban was pulled out, and quickly passed before any opposition was raised against it.
