Pickup-truck sales surpassed those of passenger cars in April, according to data from Motor Intelligence.
Zero-percent-interest loans, offered in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as a drop in passenger car sales, helped push pickups past cars.
In the first quarter of 2020, pickups and SUVs were a bright spot for Detroit automakers while much of the rest of their lineups saw sales slumps.
Forget saving the manuals, now it may be time to save the cars: Pickup sales surpassed those of passenger cars this past month for the first time ever, according to data from Motor Intelligence.
Pickup sales trailed those of passenger cars by around a half a million units in recent decades, but beginning in 2014, the gap began to narrow. The trend hasn't gone unnoticed; Ford, General Motors, and Fiat Chrysler have all cut their smaller offerings in favor of SUVs and pickups, especially as larger vehicles provide a bigger profit.

I prefer a small SUV for my commuter vehicle.
Some people like a smooth ride that weight and a longer wheelbase provides. Furthermore, trucks are not subject to the same CAFE standards as cars. Today’s Buick’s are smaller than anything imaginable in the 1960s. Pathetic death traps.

You do realize how many bodies you can haul in a pickup don’t you? Drag the bodies out, and throw in a mattress and do the Nasty with your girl friends, haul moonshine, hogs. Pretty much, even here in Central Texas. More so than pickup trucks, although a lot of the latter, too. Seems the construction workers around here still need a working truck.
I'm not surprise trucks have passed them during the lockdowns. Many cars, particularly domestic sedans, are no longer being made in favor of SUVs, although some SUVs are so small with gutless engines they might as well be labeled economy sedans with a hatch.

I bought what is likely my last new manual trans [AWD, turbo] car in March.
Mostly because the auto companies were rumored to be about to cease sales of same in the US and it’s now tough to get a manual trans, turbo [altitude compensated], 4x4 puckup.
More people than ever need don’t need something to fit a family as well.
