Coronavirus nurse finally locates NYC firefighter who pulled her from burning building 37 years ago

From one hero to another.

An out-of-town nurse on the front lines of New York’s coronavirus battle was reunited Monday with the city firefighter who saved her as a child from a burning Manhattan building nearly 40 years ago.

Deirdre Taylor, whose family left the city after the fire, thought she would never get the chance to thank the man whose bravery set the tone for much of her life.

Armed with only a picture of the Daily News’ front-page account of the rescue, Taylor had been trying, unsuccessfully, for years to track down Eugene Pugliese. She even feared the worst: That maybe he was among the 343 FDNY members killed on 9/11.

But it wasn’t until she left her husband and kids behind in Virginia and traveled to New York to pitch in against the pandemic that her persistence paid off.

She has really paid it forward. It’s a shame that she is fighting with the Wuhan Flu and for political reasons she is not being allowed to use the proven HCQ treatment.

If she knew the address of the home that burned, couldn’t she then figure out what fire companies most likely responded to the fire and have sent them a photocopy of the article to discover the fireman?

Not everyone’s mind works like yours. Much like other things you’d think would be self evident.

Heartwarming story.

And the firefighter (deservedly) looks great at 75 if the photo of him is current.

“ Sadly, the whole rescue experience has come full circle for Pugliese. The FDNY battalion chief, Al Petrocelli, who nominated Pugliese for the valor award he received, died several weeks ago from COVID-19. ” He died☹️.
