Coast Guard Base Alameda also referred to as Coast Guard Island is an artificial island in the Oakland Estuary between Oakland and Alameda, California. It is home to several major United States Coast Guard commands and cutters, including the Coast Guard Pacific Area.

It is one of the largest Coast Guard bases on the West Coast. From 1942 until 1982, the island was the site of the Coast Guard's recruiting training center (boot camp), enlisting and training hundreds of thousands of Coasties including many of the 214,239 who served in the Pacific and European Theaters of World War II.

Coast Guard Island is in the Oakland Estuary between Oakland and Alameda. The 68-acre island is situated in the historic Brooklyn Basin, now known as Embarcadero Cove. It is within the Alameda city limits, however, and only accessible via Campbell Boulevard in Oakland.

The Island supports a number of government facilities, including the Pacific Commander Station (U.S. Coast Guard District Eleven), an industrial service center, the San Francisco Marine Safety Office, a training center for reserve and enlisted coast guard personnel (class-rooms), living quarters, four 378-foot long high-endurance cutters, a medical and dental clinic, and public works facilities to service the island (i.e., sewage treatment, wastewater treatment)

Time for lunch and a little time on the deck watching the two duck families...both mommas very crabby!

Watching the weather lady now...LOTS of rain in the interior, and even flooding. Hopefully the fires received a lot of it. But here...nothing yet at my house, and only possibilities tomorrow.

I went out a little earlier to look at the beans and wished I’d gone out right after the rain to measure a couple. I swear they’ve jumped noticeably already.

Your poor plants did take a hit by the hail. Thank goodness the hail wasn’t baseball sized like what dropped from the storms last month!

Nice that you were able to relax with lunch on the deck for a bit this afternoon AND be entertained by the crabby duck mommas. LOL The one should have stayed with the food you tossed for her and her babies rather than try to steal the others’ food. Stinker!

I could see there was a lot of rain there but didn’t realize it was enough to cause some flooding. I’m with you in hoping a lot of it hit the areas that are burning.
The radar’s showing rain over Anchorage and I can see it on the cam between the mountains and the airport. I hope some of the showers are at your house.

He tried to get me to post at the Canteen but I was so new to the online world, I was afraid to. So he sicced you on me and you convinced me to hop in. LOL!

He sure did love the Coast Guard, didn’t he?

Man, I didn’t realize he’d been gone so long. It doesn’t seem like it. Very cool that his screen name is on his tombstone.
