The End of Chaz. In Seattle’s “autonomous zone,” lives are destroyed under the banner of social justice.
City Journal ^ | July 1, 2020 | Christopher F. Rufo

Posted on 07/02/2020 6:51:45 AM PDT by karpov

Early this morning, a phalanx of Seattle police officers, armed with long batons and semiautomatic rifles, cleared out the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ), also known as the Capitol Hill Occupation Protest (CHOP). Unless Antifa militants stage an unexpected counterattack, this marks the end of the 24-day occupation of the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Seattle can now begin to reckon with the damage.

The CHAZ saga began on June 8, under the premise that capitalism, police brutality, and the “fascist regime” of Seattle mayor Jenny Durkan were upholding a social order that systemically oppressed African-Americans. Black Lives Matter and Antifa-affiliated activists hoped to create a new regime based on familiar social-justice principles of recent years: they established a social order based on a “reverse hierarchy of oppression,” implemented race-based segregation in public spaces, and maintained a “police-free zone” that they believed would protect “people of color” from the depredations of the state.

As it turns out, however, maintaining public order is a complex undertaking and can’t be replaced by academic symbolism. BLM activists might despise George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison, but a regime based on the principles of Nikole Hannah-Jones, Ibram X. Kendi, and Robin DiAngelo doesn’t work too well. As CHAZ’s experience demonstrates, when left-wing radicals shift from protest to governance, things fall apart.

Ultimately, the problem of violence—and a dangerously naive understanding of policing—doomed the CHAZ. Over its 24-day history, the autonomous zone saw two gun homicides and four additional shooting victims. All the identified victims were black men—precisely the demographic for whom the CHAZ had claimed to offer protection. In the absence of a legitimate police force, armed criminal gangs and untrained anarchist paramilitaries filled the void.

The Summer of Love was more like a Spring Fling! ;)

Move ‘em out, hose ‘em down. Learn anything, Seattle?

Probably not. :(

Is there any evidence that the little people of Seattle are fed up and deserting the Democrats. Probably wishful thinking on my part; WA State voters are predictably socialist.

It was kind of a “Mini-French-revolution”. And then the adults said enough is enough.

No, wait, that suggests the mayor is an adult. She’s like a helicopter mom.

Still want to know what happened to the ATMs, bank vaults and store safes in the area. Suspect they have been cleaned out and that is why it was time to move on.

That mayor should be held accountable for the deaths of those boys. At the very least, removed from office.

This is why I moved from seattle (my home of 46 years) to rural Kentucky nine years ago.

We just got back from almost three weeks in Seattle and it almost felt like being a Jew escaping Nazi Germany for England in just the nick of time.

Except now my nine acre lawn has been growing for three weeks since its last cutting...

All the identified victims were black men—

What about the perpetrators? Any common denominators? Rich, white, colonialists probably.

I’d like to see the price tag of the property damage done in those 24 days. No doubt a lot of pissed off property and business owners. And now the insurance companies have to figure out what they will and will not pay for.

In a perfect world the bill would be handed out to BLM and the Antifa goons.

“Still want to know what happened to the ATMs, bank vaults and store safes in the area.”

Grudging admiration for people who were on-the-ball enough to take advantage of the situation.

In the lexicon of the Left, nearly everything means the opposite of what it is called or how it is described.

Idiots are out there trashing their community AS IF there are rights and privileges denied them.

The founding fathers handed Americans the keys to a near-Utopian world. Everything is possible and there is no need to kick down doors... just VOTE!

With the vote, you can access opportunities within the system and no one gets it all his own way, all the time. THAT'S how it works and has worked for so long...

Go and vote that guy out, if you he think isn't doing his job... go and vote on laws and policies that will work best for YOU and your family.

If you aren't mature enough or intelligent enough to use the key you were given... you shouldn't be kicking down the door.

When CHAZ Marxists showed up at HER house, the Seattle Mayor changed her tune.

I suspect she’ll be re-elected by the progressives in Seattle - and the 31 denizens of CHAZ that were arrested have already been quietly released.

No one will be held accountable for the shootings.

When will the media start analyzing a significant root of the problems, the breakdown of the family and the absence of fathers in the family? Why can’t we subsidize stable, two parent families and not subsidize single parent families?

The lack of intact families is likely true for many of the black rioters but most of the rioters are white. The entitled college brats who are living at home in their parents’ basements.

The black teenager Lorenzo apparently actually came from an intact family with his father and brother living in the home.
