(Governor CoonMan) Northam urges education leaders to remove Confederate names from schools

Gov. Ralph Northam wants school systems across Virginia to change the names of schools honoring Confederate leaders.

In a July 6 letter to the heads of school boards in the state, Northam says the names and mascots have a "traumatizing impact on students, families, teachers and staff of all backgrounds."

"When our public schools are named after individuals who advanced slavery and systemic racism, and we allow those names to remain on school property, we tacitly endorse their values as our own," Northam wrote. "This is no longer acceptable."

The names have come under increased scrutiny during ongoing civil unrest spurred by the May killing of George Floyd in the custody of Minneapolis police. Protesters have highlighted racial disparities in education, including the disproportionate rates at which students of color graduate and face discipline in school, with the names, opponents say, being symbols of a racially unjust system school leaders are tasked with fixing.

"Now is the time to change them to reflect the inclusive, diverse, and welcoming school community every child deserves, and that we, as leaders of the Commonwealth, have a civic duty to foster," Northam said.

Community members across the state have called for Confederate school names to be changed as part of the racial reckoning. As of 2019, Virginia's 14 Confederate school names were the second-most in the U.S., according to data from the Southern Poverty Law Center. According to Education Week, at least 194 schools in 18 states were named for men with Confederate ties as of last month.

Soon after the yearbook scandal, some astute Freepers predicted that Northam will eventually get his pander machine running full blast. He wants to bring back the black voters he might have alienated.

Those Freepers were, of course, correct.

Demographics of school districts change over time.

I have no problem with renaming a school.

The problem I have is that they are pushing for the change because of the “feelings” of the students.

I shudder to think of the names of hard leftists they could come up with as an “appropriate” name to look up to.

Bruce Lee movies. Gotta get rid of Bruce Lee movies (and The Green Hornet TV show). Lee. Robert E. Lee.

That goes for Michelle Lee, Brenda Lee, Christopher Lee, Spike Lee and Stan Lee.

Purity requires it...

So he will order Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Hancock, Revere, Hale, and others removed from history books, along with any names of any individuals in government prior to 2008. This is where history will begin, and the Left will erase all history before that. This is how they did it Nazi Germany, burn the books

Over the past several decades, many facts of America's founding have been censored from textbooks, libraries, and other parts of the "public square," but, the so-called "progressive" regressives would never call it that.

"Ideas have consequences"(Weaver).

The ideas of 1776 came out of a set of ideas consistent with liberty.

We tend to forget, or have never considered, that many world views existed then, as now.

Unless today's citizens rediscover the ideas of liberty existing in what Jefferson called "the American mind" of 1776, we risk going back to the "Old World" ideas which preceded the "Miracle of America."

There are those who call themselves "progressives," when, in fact, their ideas are regressive and enslaving, and as old as the history of civilization.

Would suggest to any who wish an authentic history of the ideas underlying American's founding a visit to this web site, at which Richard Frothingham's outstanding 1872 "History of the Rise of the Republic of the United States" can be read on line.

This 600+-page history traces the ideas which gave birth to the American founding. Throughout, Richard Frothingham, the historian, develops the idea that it is "the Christian idea of man" which allowed the philosophy underlying the Declaration of Independence and Constitution to become a reality--an idea which recognizes the individual and the Source of his/her "Creator"-endowed life, liberty and law.

Is there any wonder that the enemies of freedom, the so-called "progressives," do not promote such authentic histories of America? Their philosophy puts something called "the state," or "global interests" as being superior to individuals and requires a political elitist group to decide what role individuals are to play.

In other words, they must turn the Founders' ideas upside-down in order to achieve a common mediocrity for individuals and power for themselves.

it pains me that we dont spend more time teaching kids that life is full of idiots looking to rattle yoi, and that strength comes from being able to shrug off tiny aggressions like a school named for someone you dislike.

i cant remember spending a minute of my time fretting about whose name was on my school, my street, or my government buildings.

nor do i care, remove all the nsmes, they are buildings, name them for the street they are on.

oh yes, my elementary school was named by the roda.

oh, so is my church. convenient for finding it on a map.

The American people always believed the title of a book, “It Can’t Happen Here.” But it’s here and embraced by tens of millions.
