The only way for fully automated cars to work safely is when ALL cars are self-driving. All following preprogrammed rules. No self-driving vehicle is safe to operate in a mixed environment where human unpredictability is a factor.

Secondly, as a person who drives a Tesla Model 3 with the Full Self-Driving package, I see a handful of edge cases just in my measly amount of driving that seem tricky and hard to resolve.

I think there’s an entire rewrite coming out soon that will make problems with the current system irrelevant.

FSD will be great for long trips. I’m fine with driving at waypoints, it’s the multi-hundred-mile stretches of clearly marked road, no complications, and stark raging boredom as I micro manage every second for hours.

To me, it seems Musk has a full plate already. Rather than jump into robocars, I think he ought to build in and around his existing ventures.
