Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvins wife is asking for the couples two homes in their divorce and could walk away with them if he doesnt contest her request.
Veteran family law attorneys said its too early to determine whether Chauvins wife, Kellie Chauvin, is asking for more than half the couples assets because divvying up marital assets is a complicated process.
She filed for divorce two days after her husband was charged with murder and manslaughter in the May 25 killing of George Floyd, who died after then-officer Chauvin planted his knee on Floyds neck for nearly eight minutes as Floyd lay prone in the street in handcuffs.
Kellie Chauvin, 45, filed a divorce petition May 31 in Washington County District Court, less than a week after Floyds killing. Some have questioned whether her demand for real estate is a ploy to protect the assets from a lawsuit. Family law attorneys say its too soon to draw any conclusions.

Maybe she will get everything she wants...Maybe Chauvin does not care about that at this time...He does not have a lawyer in the divorce case...
I'm sure he has other legal matters on his mind at the moment.
I’m sure he has other legal matters on his mind at the moment.
Or waiting for his suicide to happen
Could this be a strategy to protect personal assets from civil suits?
Certainly he’s unlikely to be in need of housing in the next 7 lifetimes served consecutively.
Maybe this is to preserve his assets for his wife and/or children in case he gets sued.
A fast divorce is a smart financial move.
If I was persecuted like the four cops are being I would give everything to my wife and divorce her on the spot. Otherwise it will be confiscated to settle the civil lawsuits that are sure to follow.
He is going to jail. He does not need a house. Floyds family is going to take everything from him. He should let her take all she can. He can’t retain any assets. He will be in jail.
Absolutely. Post haste.
I have heard same, and it makes sense.
Yes.
It's the reason she filed for divorce so quickly, to establish the date of separation early before the lawsuits got filed going after his assets. He's never going to be able to own anything the rest of his life even if he manages to stay out of jail. He'll have lawsuits filed against him until his dying day, his only hope is to become a pauper and a divorce giving all the assets to the ex-wife is a quick way to become one.
This divorce is all about getting everything out of his name and protecting assets from the inevitable lawsuits.
Note to self: Don’t kneel on someone’s neck and much trouble will be avoided.
A very common strategy.
Better to “lose” it to someone you love than someone who hates you.
The court can’t do a clawback on his assets if it determines he shed them just to protect his assets from seizure?
Likely protecting the families assets.
Without a doubt. Lightning fast divorce filing to shelter assets from civil suits and, perhaps, exorbitant trial attorney fees.
He sure isn’t going to need anything where he is going.
My thoughts exactly.
