The Pentagon on Friday laid out a new policy on Friday that will ban displays of the Confederate flag on military installations, in a memo that avoids mentioning an explicit ban or the controversial flag itself.
Flags are powerful symbols, particularly in the military community for whom flags embody common mission, common histories, and the special, timeless bond of warriors, the memo, obtained by Fox News, says.
The memo, signed by Defense Secretary Mark Esper, lists the type of flags that may be displayed at military installations -- including the American flag, military service flags, flags of U.S. states and territories and the POW/MIA flag, as well as flags for which the U.S. is a member such as NATO.
The Confederate flag is not included on that list. The Associated Press, which first obtained the memo, reported that the move was done in a way to ban it without angering or contradicting President Trump, who has defended the right to display it. A Defense Department official, however, said that it was to ensure the policy was apolitical and could withstand legal challenge.
The flags we fly must accord with the military imperatives of good order and discipline, treating all our people with dignity and respect, and rejecting divisive symbols the memo says.
Confederate flags, monuments and military base names have become a point of controversy for protesters and activists in the weeks since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
In many parts of the country, state officials have taken down Confederate monuments and symbols over the Confederacys legacy of slavery. But many activists have since moved on to targeting past figures and symbols of U.S. history in general.
Trump has rejected the idea of changing base names.

Cornyn is an idiot who has been quietly advancing the Bush Plan for North Mexico (aka USA).
He is more of a traitor than Hood was.
The President cannot ban a flag.
Whats the matter with these people?
At no time have I ever seen the Starts and Bars or the actual Confederate Flag flown on any US Military Installation. In over 45 years of service, I only saw it in the back window of some idiots truck. I am not convinced this ruling could even prevent that. Because we make up less then 5% of the entire population, civilians are not aware of how integrated the military is and how 99% of us would never even think of offending a brother or sister in such a manner. There are only Green Marines and Soldiers and Blue Sailors and Airmen. The 1% get unwarranted attention by civilians who do not know better.
Those bases were named as they were as an act of reconciliation and reunification.
Because they let the Mexican flag fly on bases and other flags too. It is biggoted to single out the Virginia battle flag.
That’s right, the flag is NOT the flag of the Confederate States of America.
Read a history book.
This.
I know some AF Base Commanders barred retirees from the base using COVID as a pretext. Locally, it felt they could not legally bar a DOD ID Card holder from entering the Base. So I guess it is something that would have to end up at the SECDEF level if challenged. As for the masks, they required it here but not consistently. The Exchanges/PX are able to apply it as part of a “dress code.” But, from what I saw, they took a no confrontation attitude and did not stop unmasked shoppers from using the facility. DACA runs all the Commissary systems and they made their own rule no mask no entry, that is not a Base CO order. The Base does not control DACA.
The Commissary manager at the base near me must be an a-hole. Ive seen him call base security for people who didnt keep their masks on while grocery shopping.
I read a lot of people advocating for CWII. They consider themselves patriots remaining true to the Constitution and the Republic. They complain the Republic has let them down via politicians and we need to water the Tree of Liberty again. Of course if there was a shooting war (CWII) and they lost, many of the same people calling Confederates traitors would themselves be considered traitors. Their symbols purged and their graves and statutes defaced.
He is an a-hole. But DACA made masks it’s policy, they will not let you in without one. But, early on our Commissary had masks at the door of you forgot yours.
I wonder if someone flew one of the actual “Stars and Bars” flags, how many people would recognize it. (There were several versions of the flag.)
Im a born yankee but spent 15 years in NC. Yeah, there are stars and bars, but southerners are Americans first, and more loyal to America than 90% of democrat city slickers. Esper and that Indian woman SC Governor who took down the confederate flag should be locked up for being stupid.
Will armor units still hang photos of Rommel?
You do not win the Medal of Honor. Its not a race. BTW, get to know some southern folks (not a New England yankee transplant).
If he can't them his subordinates surely can't either, right?
There is a reference in here to flying flags.
Are decals, bumper stickers, and 4’ x 8’ sheets of painted plywood banned too?
My understanding was that they were named that way in order to gain local political support for the land usage. Fort Hood was established in 1942, 77 years after the end of the Civil War. Not sure there was a pressing need for reconciliation and reunification some 3 generations later.
In any case, they were named after traitors, and US Army bases should not be named after traitors. It’s more than past time to rectify this mistake and name them instead after US Army heroes. Don’t you think Audie Murphy is deserving of this honor, and a much better role model for today’s soldiers (compared to a traitor and LOSER like Hood)?
They can ban it from their workplace. But the President cannot just say. No more confederate flags.
The President should just come out and tell these people they are idiots who dont know how things work. Would that be too clear? LOL.
I’m sorry, I should have said “awarded” or “earned” a Medal of Honor.
I don’t understand who the New England yankee transplant you’re referring to is. It’s certainly not Audie Murphy, who was born in Kingston, Texas. As for me, both my Mother and Father are from Texas (my Dad has a few Okies in his family tree, but we don’t talk about them much).
