NY passes Juneteenth holiday, automatic voter registration

State lawmakers wrapped up work Thursday on bills ranging from automatic voter registration to two new public holidays celebrating Juneteenth and Abolition Commemoration Day.

The state Senate and Assembly worked into the evening Thursday on bills addressing calls for a reckoning on the nation's history of slavery and racism, a law shielding nursing homes from lawsuits amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and efforts to make it easier to vote in the Nov. 6 election. Several bills — including a moratorium on facial recognition programs at schools — will eventually head to the desk of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who then faces a 10-day deadline to act.

AUTOMATIC VOTER REGISTRATION

Some state agencies will automatically register voters under another bill the Democratic-led Legislature passed.

Federal law already requires state motor vehicle departments and public assistance agencies to offer applicants an opportunity to register to vote. But in recent years, voting right groups have pushed states to automatically register voters who interact with those state agencies.

Automatic registration will include non-citizens, that’s the plan.

We have this in Florida and it’s great! Go to the DMV and you get license and register to vote.

Juneteenth has nothing to do with New York.

Are they going to celebrate San Jacinto Day too?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Jacinto_Day

San Jacinto Day is the celebration of the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. It was the final battle of the Texas Revolution where Texas won its independence from Mexico.

It is an official “partial staffing holiday” in the State of Texas (state offices are not closed on this date).

...The documentary details the annual San Jacinto Day celebration and shows the reenactment of the 18 minute battle.

[[facial recognition programs at schools]]
So they can gather a database of legal citizens that they can harrass when they get out of school, and a database of illegals that they can coddle and bow down to

***Juneteenth has nothing to do with New York.***

And it would still be six months before slaves in the Northern Slave States would be freed when the 13th Amendment was ratified.

Lincoln proclaimed slavery’s end on September 22nd but the date is ignored like other significant days in September Like the 2nd in 1945 when Japan formally surrendered ending WW2 or September 3rd 1784. When the Paris Treaty was signed thus the world formally recognizing the existence of the United States as a country also wind up forgotten dates

NY is not going Trump anyways.

Doesn’t matter if the whole state votes against him. There’s still only so many electoral votes and he’s not getting them.

It’s not likely to affect state politics either since NY is already a dem controlled state.

This is despicable and disgusting, but no surprise.

Actually, the NY legislature had generally been Republican. But once the dems got control, they are trying to keep it forever.
