Mnuchin Reveals What the Next Coronavirus Relief Package Will Look Like

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Saturday said the next phase of the Wuhan coronavirus relief package is ready to be rolled out on Monday. Republicans are expected to announce a $1 trillion proposal which would include another round of stimulus checks.

According to Mnuchin, Americans can anticipate a $1,200 stimulus check sometime in August. The same stipulations will take place as the first round of stimulus payments. Individuals making $75,000 or less will receive $1,200. Those making more than $75,000 will receive some type of stimulus but it won't be the full amount. Those making $100,000 or more per year will not qualify.

“We’re prepared to move quickly,” he told the Los Angeles Times.

Republicans in the House and Senate, along with President Donald Trump, are all working together on this proposal. Mnuchin reportedly called Democratic Leadership – including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) – before negotiations begin next week.

“The president has been very clear. He wants to make sure that the American people have what they need during this unprecedented time,” Trump's chief of staff, Mark Meadows said. The president wants “to make sure not only the money is there but the programs.”

The one area in question is unemployment. The White House reportedly wanted to drop the weekly rate by $100, from $600 per week to $500 per week. Republicans, on the other hand, wanted to see the weekly rate drop by $200, from $600 per week to $400 per week. The idea is that cutting back unemployment benefits will encourage Americans to get back to work.

I’m wondering where the “means tested” approach to this came from. I would agree with a cut line ~$250,000. $100,000 these days doesn’t go nearly as far as it used to (it’s middle class, for us on the east coast).

If you guys in gubbermint are assigning a lot of debt to be paid by us in the future, how do you justify means testing this? How is it different than what the ‘Rats do?

I don’t want another stimulus check. I want the bastards to stop taking my money every 2 weeks.

It's not called the stupid party for no reason. Right now the Republicans in the Senate are setting themselves up to run not only against the Rats but even Trump and Mnuchin, who want $500 instead of $400. Morons.

Apart from the politics, having just seen all the shuttered businesses downtown where I live and all the 'For Lease/For Sale' signs on business locations, the extra money can make the difference between living in your home and being on the street.

Unless, of course, you're a government employee and continue to receive a full paycheck even if not working.

The next time there is a Democratic President, and unfortunately there will be a next time, they are going to raise our taxes through the roof. And they will use this as an excuse.

Mitch McConnell always looks like a deer caught in the headlights. He has the Senate in recess for critical weeks and waits until the last minute to present something, as millions of unemployed workers (read: voters) wonder if they’ll be able to pay the rent or if their jobs are even coming back when this is over. Then he blandly babbles on about $100 a week and stimulus checks only going to those making under $40,000 a year. How out of touch can you be in a crucial election year?!

The Democrats will pounce on this and hammer away at the GOP in the court of public opinion. Unfortunately, right now is not the time for worrying about the deficit. Make this the last stimulus and make it substantial. Trump could win the election on this, wearing the mask, and the stepped up efforts to get a vaccine. The GOP will be perceived as really doing something to help end this crisis and help ordinary Americans.
Mnuchin has hinted there could be another round of stimulus after this one. No! Stop these piecemeal handouts. Get it done and get it over with!

Every time the government passes out free money, the US Dollar is worth a little bit less.

Your savings will soon be worthless. My son is in college. Every one of his friends are on unemployment making $800 plus a week. Most of these kids never worked more than 10 hours a week prior to covid. Amerika

yep... we have jobs for college kids. Normally hire about 50 each summer. Can’t get a single one to work. Nobody applying for Jobs in St. Louis or Kansas City. Seems that paying them more benefits keeps them at home vs working. America has died.

I think Trump's initial response-- a bigger stimulus check-- was the right one. Now the Republicans are coming pretty close to talking about forcing people back to work. Is that the image they want out there?

Don't they even think about how that will play? Or are they so bought and paid for by the business class that low wages are the only thing they care about?

Trump needs to get out in front of this issue and tell Mnuchin and the Senate to pass the $500 right away and STFU.

As Kim Strassel wrote recently, Mnuchin seems to be working to ensure that the Democrats get what they want.

We cannot afford another “stimulus.” We need to keep the economy growing.

Nice to have some money, but each dollar will be worth 60% of what it was in January.

Prices shooting up all over!
