Tom Soulsby, 69, and his wife, Mary, were one of the first to buy a bunker at Vivos xPoint the self-proclaimed largest survival community on Earth near the South Dakota town of Edgemont. In 2017, he made a $25,000 down payment and signed a 99-year land lease (with fees of $1,000 per year) to occupy an elliptical-shaped, 2,200 square-foot underground concrete bunker once used as a military fortress during World War II to store weapons and ammunition.
What he got for his money is security and not much else. Sealed by a concrete and steel blast door entrance, each shelter comes retrofitted with electrical wiring, an internal power generation system, plumbing, and walls designed to withstand a 500,000-pound internal blast. Everything else food, entertainment, a sense of community is up to the occupant.
Soulsbys goal, as he explains to cultural geographer Bradley Garrett author of the new book Bunker: Building for the End Times (Scribner), out Tuesday was never to become a full-time bunker resident.
This is just an insurance policy, he said. Im going to fix it up and pass it down to my family. I hope no one ever has to use it.
But if it becomes necessary and with the COVID-19 pandemic and violent uprisings around the country, it seems increasingly likely to Soulsby that it will be his bunker is well-stocked and move-in ready.
Its already home sweet bunker around here, he told Garrett.

If he’s worried about societal chaos then he needs a strong tower — not a hole in the ground.
Or better yet. A remote tower with a double level basement. Just in case there’s a massive nuclear exchange.
I’d buy one for an office or a safe space, in the event of a break in.

Sooo, how do these people defend their bunkers while theyre inside behind their blast proof doors? All the marauding hoards need to do is block off the air supply and wait them out.
Around 1960 the Walton County Florida, county fair had a fallout shelter on display. I think everybody was interested but just about no one actually bought one.
There was a lot of discussion about whether you should shoot your neighbor if he tried to get in your fallout shelter after a nuclear war.
I liked 10 Cloverfield Lane better.
how many rolls of toilet paper would you need?
We live in a 100% white, very rural area of the country. Lots of woods, ponds and lakes and tasty animals. Our town of less than 400 people is like going back to the 1950’s.
People from large cities are coming in and buying land and houses in droves. 3 large parcels of ground within a mile of me sold in the last 2 months to out of towners who plan on building homes.
We are afraid our little Shangrila is going to be gentrified by liberals soon.
There was a Richard Benjamin movie.
Packin It In maybe and people had bunkers.
Decent comedy.
Prepare for the future!
Saw a documentary of a multilevel bunker made from an old nuke silo. They guy said they looked into TP but it would have taken up an entire level so they went with bidets instead.

Best to hide behind the Rock of Jesus Christ.
Revelation 6:15-16
“And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains,
“and said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!”
I spotted one of these on Zillow near the NC shore, waterfront on one of the rivers off the Albemarle sound. Another one nearby was used as an example of what you could do by building an actual house above it. Bunker would be like the basement, except you go outside to enter thru the blastproof door. I think the waterfront lot and bunker were on the $130’s?

Less than I’ve got right now. ;-)

Yup. Wait - or just chuck stink bombs (or worse) down the air ducts and “smoke” ‘em out.
