keep going this way and it will go on for years.

It really won't. It's a matter of time before the food supply chain collapses. I'm thinking months or even weeks.

Many, if not most restaurants in Manhattan have had thin margins to begin with.

I understand it to be that a restaurant doesn't make money until it's at 60-65% capacity. So if that's nationwide, and I believe it is, the entire industry is gone.

I’m surprised even 17% still have the ability to pay

Probably those restaurants that were able to transition successfully to an entirely carry-out/delivery model. I believe this pandemic has destroyed those restaurants where the food was not the main draw for customers.

The various shutdowns were unappealable death sentences for some fraction of restaurants.

15.7% unemployment rate in NYS.

And I don’t think it’s going down any time soon thanks to Il Duce and our rubber stamp legislature.

No flame here, but how do you see the food supply chain collapsing?

I saw an article that listed just some of the volume of restaurant supply equipment, and full restaurants, that are for sale just on the FB marketplace. I feel bad for all those small businesses and hope they can get through it for the better in the end, one way or another.

As for Robert DeNiro and his sushi chain and hotel, well, I guess he’s a friendly fire casualty of the left.

I guarantee that Covid restrictions are going to go away, and Covid is going to become like a cold. That said, the restaurant industry is going to need to adapt to survive, and there are definitely ways they can alter their models and do that.

On the other hand, at least dating will become cheaper.

Restaurants that can’t pay rent this month won’t be able to restock or make payroll next month. As they go out of business it will reverberate all up the food supply chain. Wholesalers and distributors will be in trouble but can the markets, even supermarkets keep up? With the increase in unemployment I have my doubts but we will know in months not years.

It appears like the state is just another gangster with their taxes.

The state caused the shutdown, but you still have to pay them a percentage even if your income is curtailed.

Some of these owners are not poor pitiful paupers at all and could easily pay the rent out of their own personal accounts. But they won’t. They want tax payer $$$. Free money.

Outdoor Dining Will Return Next Year, Mayor Says

New, 27 comments

Outdoor dining will tentatively start on June 1 next year

NYC’s widespread outdoor dining program will return next year, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced in a press conference on Monday. The popular program will tentatively start on June 1 next year, although de Blasio said that the start date could potentially be pushed to earlier in the spring of 2021.

Since the city first allowed outdoor dining on sidewalks and in parking spaces earlier this year, 9,700 restaurants in the city have applied and been approved for outdoor dining permits, according to NYC’s Department of Transportation. The mayor said during the press conference that the program has supported approximately 80,000 jobs within the industry.

The mayor called the program a “tremendous success,” and said that the announcement today was made in advance so that restaurateurs and bar owners could depend on “additional revenue going forward” from the outdoor dining program.

Thousands of NYC’s restaurants and bars have been taking advantage of program, although many say that sales from outdoor dining alone are not enough to cover long-term operating costs. Last week, an NYC council member spearheaded a small business recovery plan that included calling on local government to institute a permanent outdoor dining program in the city.

The State Liquor Authority has also been active in the city to enforce social-distancing requirements with outdoor dining. Over 100 restaurants and bars have received citations from the State Liquor Authority due to social-distancing violations, and dozens of other establishments have had their liquor licenses temporarily suspended due to “egregious” violations of the social-distancing regulations.

This year’s outdoor dining program is currently scheduled to end on October 31, although that deadline may be extended depending on the weather. “We’re going to look at whether we can go further this year,” de Blasio said. “It’s still an open question.”

The mayor did not provide an update on the status of indoor dining in the city, which was postponed indefinitely earlier this year as other areas of the country saw a rise in COVID-19 cases, in part due to indoor dining activities.

Meanwhile, the actual city can’t afford to be

The question rises, does the city deserve to be?
