No, that’s a surface launched cruise missile, intended to attack a surface target. It’s likely some development of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RK-55

What took out the Ukrainian airliner was a surface-to-air battery’s missile, most likely a Tor missile system vehicle firing a 9K330/331/332 missile: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tor_missile_system

I believe these are not your typical missile silos.

These are "deeply buried" and camouflaged.

Too bad our domestic enemies stopped development of some of our best defenses.

but it has to be in the air where the missiles are, at the time when the missiles are there...

The Missile Knows Where it is

It’s been done by automated systems engagement, actually. But, as I noted earlier, you would need to know well in advance to station the right aircraft with the right munitions at the right points to intercept the missile. If you know where the missiles are going to be transiting, it can be done.

We’re working on some tech to make it work with less expensive missiles, even with those slim odds - an F-16 carried out a successful intercept and shootdown of a simulated TFR cruise missile in an experiment late last year:

There have also been developments for ground defenses, but basically those also require fortuitous positioning - the cruise missiles have to fly over or relatively close to the AA batteries.

Yes, but the *defenders* don’t usually know where it is... if they don’t know, intercept probabilities tank.

Cheap copy of the Chinese YJ-82/C-802 missile.

No it’s the kh or rk-55 family.

Been reading up on this. It’s one of several missiles derived from the kh-55 platform that the Ukrainians sold to Iran after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Probably a Soufar.

The air intercept isn’t vaporware, the lasers currently are, but there are Euro market AA batteries that have some tested anti-CM capabilities.

FYI, the KH and RH only look similar, they’re not related. This is an RH.

Iran has been taking lessons from that little guy in North Korea. Damn I can see the midget but I can’t remember his name.

He must not be important.

“ They wouldn’t work against a cruise missile.”

You misunderstand. Iran was of the opinion that their “underground missile from the depths of the earth” was something new.

During the Cold War the US had nuclear tipped Nike missile sites, one of which is very close to where I live. They used subterranean missile silos, hidden on farms in rural areas.

Iranian missiles are being touted because the up coming nuclear devices were destroyed again by unknown forces with total knowledge to do the most damage with the lest effort.

I understand the concept, but it’s generally for the vertical lift phase.

This bird looked to be going horizontal already.

Kim is very, very inconspicuous lately. Like, all summer. Invisible. Uncorporeal even. As if he’s been having an out-of-body experience.
