Must watch — Doctor shows inefficiency of masks…

I havent posted a thread in a few years now, but I hadnt seen this posted already and it seems like it should be getting attention. My apologies if I missed where it has already been posted. Pretty convincing if you believe your own eyes and trumps any 'science' about masks I have seen to date. Its only a 2:55 video.

“You are being told to wear the mask because it is supposed to protect you (or the other person, they cant decide which), and yet it clearly does not.”

Actually, it’s not clear and I’ve looked into it. There is some minimal protection in hotspots, likely indoors.

I’m not a fan.

>to keep their bacteria and viruses out of your open wounds

Can you name any viruses, especially respiratory ones, that can cause wound infections? I can name plenty of bacteria that potentially cause wound infections. I can conceive of warts (hardly a respiratory virus) spreading to a wound site or herpes simplex (to which most will have already developed immunity before needing surgery; and for the exceptions, few MDs/RNs kiss surgical sites) but I can't think of any respiratory viruses known for causing wound infections. That isn't why surgical masks are worn.

I dont vape but water is the main ingredient according to most sources. So you seem to know different. Please reference the molecular size of a aerosol water vapor to a polyethylene glycol vapor, and the mix proportion of the ingredients in vape liquid. The point of the experiment was to have a visual of the permeability of the masks, which you cant see with pure water vapor.

And that you still deny seeing the vape come through at least the first two of the masks tells me you are not being honest.

splitting hairs here. Protecting and minimal protection are not the same thing.

Of course there is not going to be 100% protection from a virus, but from the beginning, some have claimed models and the ability to predict spread and infection and death, all the while ignoring far more variables than they ever considered in their predictions. Human behavior has to be modeled and they cant get that right.

This is a highly contagious flu, when it comes down to it. We have all gotten the flu. We mostly recover from the flu. Some folks with compromised immune systems or the elderly have a tougher time. Some die.

We have turned our society on its head to fight off something that can not be completely eliminated, and must be worked through. The social distancing is touted as the best answer and its reasonable and it has broad support without imposing dictates. Shuttering businesses does not have support anymore. Voluntarily wearing masks in certain situations makes sense for certain people. Mandated wearing of masks does not have support and is being used as a divisive issue by too many. If you are one who wants others to wear masks, find ways to adapt and assume everyone does not agree with you. Dont blame others for your fears or disabilities.

We’re past 100% on anything. A mask may be of limited value in a hot spot. That’s all.

masks may not be perfect, especially those paper masks, but we nurses have been wearing them for DECADES in droplet isolation...

this mask controversy is just like the "prayer in school" and "burning the American flag"....

pick you battles...pick your fights...

so many other indignities the state mandates and wearing a mask is a little one...

I generally figured surgeon's masks were at least as much to protect the surgeon from the patient as the reverse. Arterial bleeders can easily spray into the mouth, nose or eyes of the surgeon. Thinking back to the early days of the HIV epidemic, when everyone was still scared spitless of getting HIV, reported cases of docs getting HIV from patients were MUCH greater than cases of patients getting it from their docs. Masks will keep that potentially lethally contagious blood from getting to where it can infect you.

No it is a sneeze guard that you wear the virus needs you to move.it can’t move on it’s own.The mask is to prevent you from spreading this damn bug like a latter day typhoid Mary.

That question is as stupid as the one where people ask, “If masks don’t work, why do doctors wear them?”

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Someone (Mayflower Madam) who has openly said she will not vote for President Trump calling someone else stupid. That’s rich.

As I said to the other ignorant poster who replied to the same post as you did, it would serve you well to read the posts that led up to the one I made about Mr. Cain. You have no idea about the point I was making.

Hey Palo Pete, what do you think a germ is?

It’s PALEO...not PALO...if you want to try and make me look stupid, try to at least get my handle right...

Do YOU know what a germ is? Judging by that picture, nope...

OK wise guy...I should have used the word bacteria. Germ is a catch-all term used to refer to viruses, bacteria or any other micro-organism, and usually intended to imply a pathogen. Not to be confused with wheat germ, which is basically the embryo of the wheat plant, and a totally different concept. And I think you know damn well I was not confusing wheat germ with coronavirus...if you’re trying to be obstinate and irritating, you’re doing a good job of it.

Many bacteria are large enough to be seen with an optical microscope, while viruses are much smaller and can only be seen with the use of an electron microscope.

The largest specimen of coronavirus measured was about .14 micron, while the pores in an N95 mask are .3 micron, more than twice as big. (coronavirus ranges .05 to .14 micron in size) To put that in perspective, how much trouble would you have walking through a 10 foot diameter pipe? That’s how much trouble a single coronavirus organism would have going through the standard mask sold at wally world, which is not as efficient as an N95...

Yes I know what a germ is...I should have said bacteria...or bacterium. The general idea is still the same. Bacterium (the proper plural) are much larger.

And by the way wheat germ is a very small section of the smaller kernel or wheatberry actually shown in your picture.

hope that works...

Of course I’m voting for Trump. I am a bit disenchanted with him because he caved on the mask thing, but who else would I vote for?

Bears Repeating.....

The virus is ~0.1 micron. Look it up on he CDC website.

The N95 type respirator masks are rated based on the % of particulates they filter. An N95 filters 95%, an N99 filters 99%, etc... THEY ARE ONLY RATED DOWN TO 2.5 MICRONS. Go to OSHA and look up the ratings.

Yeah, but you said, “Germs are much larger than viruses or bacteria”. If germs are viruses and bacteria, they are not larger than viruses bacteria. So if masks work for germs, they work for bacteria and viruses.

If she weren’t my sister, and I didn’t know her, I doubt I would say anything to her. However, she IS my sister, and I know her better than probably anyone on this planet, at least in certain ways.

She wants to be reassured. That much I can tell you. When she talks with me, I get the sense that if we could just talk more frequently, I could get a little bit of her fear to dissipate.

She really wants to live again, but the news and others have made her over the top fearful. I think if she got CoVid, she might do fine as long as she has a doctor who will give the HCQ cocktail right away. Of course, I do not know, there is no crystal ball.

I can tell you this much. If she ventured out past her yard once a week, she would probably be fine. She lives in a decent neighborhood, and before CoVid, when I have visited, you’d only see people walk by every so often. Maybe a few people in a couple of hours. There’s barely any activity, but she is afraid of even that. It is unrealistic.

I love my sister and the LAST thing I would want is for her to die, from CoVid or any number of other possibilities. I also don’t enjoy seeing her cowering in fear like this. We are all fearful to an extent. I’m sorry, but the Democrats and the media have made my emotionally vulnerable sister transform into a hermit. This isn’t healthy for her. So yes, under certain somewhat safe circumstances, I am hoping to convince her to take a chance. Life is worth living.

OK so I mixed things up a little.

And you are twisting things around exactly like a liberal, to try and “prove” me wrong...

Even though I may have confused the terms, bacterium are still much larger than viruses, and according to earlier research, bacterium are not completely stopped by masks, even those used in surgery. Which are better than the crap sold at wally world...

All you have to do is watch one of at least 3 videos I know of where different people use vaping items to present a visual representation of what actually happens when a mask is used, and why it is useless.

But why are you intruding on a discussion that did not involve you to begin with, to start a dispute and attempt insulting someone who never said a word to you in the first place...unless you’re just another senseless twit who gets his jollies starting arguments for no other reason than to start trouble...???

Masks do not work. That is quite obvious from this video, if you bothered to watch it at all...which I doubt...and what we’re dealing with here is a virus, which measures less than half the size of the openings in the mask that are intended to allow the flow of oxygen to the user. Air, and therefore anything it carries with it, takes the path of least resistance, and goes in and out the gaps at the nose and between the straps. Carrying the virus with it.

And that is a physical reality that does not change, whether I call it by the right name or not. Argue semantics all you want, the damn thing STILL does not stop a virus...or bacteria...or germ, if you want to use the generic term.

And in addition to that, if you bother to check the labels which I have done, you’ll notice 2 things.

1) Very few are made anywhere other than China. I’m supposed to trust a mask made in China to stop a virus they sent here? HUH??? They probably infused it into the thing...

2) Every one I’ve checked so far also includes on tbe label a notice such as:

Not a medical device.
Not intended for health care situations.
This device will not prevent infections due to viruses or bacteria.
Not approved for hospital use.

So why are politicians demanding we wear them? And why should I trust China, our greatest enemy, to make one that will do anything at all to even slow down a virus when they want to see that virus destroy our economy and result in tbe removal of our president, by any meams necessary, so they can go back to their previous scenario of totally unfair trade deals, and an unobstructed path to world domination?

You think this is all fun and games...troll the forums, attack anyone for any little reason you can find, twist their words around to use against them and it’s all a game...to you.

China is destroying the entire world’s economy. Theirs is in trouble too, although they won’t admit it. Flooding is also causing serious problems for them, while the billions they screwed us out of just stopped. And the world suffers because their communist politicians wanted to retaliate against their antagonist, President Donald Trump.

And the best you can do is nitpick about someone using the wrong word to make a point...

China loves you. Maybe you should move there and see how long you get away with this kind of crap in a society where EVERYYHING you do is watched by the government...exactly what your buddies in the democrat party want for this country...which is why they are demanding masks...control...they have no interest in stopping coronavirus, if they did the mask demand would not exist. They want to keep it going long enough to get Trump out of their hair, before he shuts fown their corruption entirely.

That is what this is about. And you’re happy to do your part to help of course...by stirring up animosity...

Just go away already...

Vaping is not a germ, so the video shows nothing meaningful. We already know masks are permeable: oxygen passes through masks, else you would suffocate. You aren’t trying to filter a single strand of virus, you are trying to filter the much larger spittle, or droplets, expelled when infected people cough, sneeze, or speak.

Did I say vaping is a germ? No.

Now you’re just arguing for the sake of argument. Which I expected.

Masks might stop the larger droplets but will not stop the lighter than air and much smaller ones very similar to that vaping smoke - properly called microdrops - which is the same vapor you exhale, but containing enough solids you can see it. Vaping implies the use of vapor...which is just what you exhale. Breathe on a mirror if you don’t believe me. You can see it.

Tiny microdrops you cannot see are exhaled with every breath, and that is where the problem is. With vaping, you can see it. You can see what actually happens, but with someone who is actually sick, you cannot. But they still exhale the exact same way, the exact same amount of air escapes the mask, and the air they exhale does contain microscopic water drops, which in turn contain the organisms that spread the virus. Your mask may stop those. Maybe. But they also get into your eyes.

Anyone who is actually sick should avoid going into public places, and if unavoidable, wear a mask to at least try and slow it down. It will help very little, but may stop the larger droplets.

Nobody else should need one. All the hysteria is nonsense.

What is worse, is what I see every time I go into town.

Loose fitting masks, bulge between the straps, gaps at the bridge of the nose, and people play with them constantly...readjusting and such...without bothering to wash their hands...

I’m convinced masks are CAUSING the spread, not stopping it.

Proper use of a mask means put it on right, get a good fit, then DO NOT TOUCH IT until you take it off. Wash your hands thoroughly when you do, dispose of it in a safe manner, not by dropping it in the trash beside the door at the grocery store...and put a new one on, NEVER reuse one.

The way people fiddle with the thing all day take it off then back on at the next store, scratch their eyes or nose after handling it...it’s no surprise we have a major epidemic on our hands. It’s made of absorbent material, it absorbs all those clouds of microdrops you’re terrified of, and every time you handle it, you get them all over your fingers, then do you wash your hands well EVERY time you touch your mask? EVERY TIME YOU TOUCH IT? I seriously doubt it.

You’re much more likely to get this virus through something your hands touch, like a door knob or shopping cart handle, or by those microdrops getting into your eyes, than by breathing them into your respiratory system. That includes touching that nasty petri dish you’re wearing on your face and not washing your hands.

And then, a large proportion of the population already has immunity, through exposure to previous versions of coronavirus. This is why only 17% of the people on a cruise ship were infected, and half of them never knew it.

Now leave me alone...I’m getting tired of the nonsense and you are arguing just to keep an argument going.
