Virginia city renames burial site of Stonewall Jackson

— A Virginia city has officially renamed the cemetery where Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson is buried.

The city council in Lexington voted unanimously Thursday to adopt a law changing the name of Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery to Oak Grove Cemetery, news outlets reported.

The Civil War general, who owned slaves and fought to defend the practice, was buried in the cemetery more than 150 years ago.

Officials faced calls from community members in June to change the name and remove all other monuments and places honoring Confederate figures within city limits, as communities around the world faced similar demands to address racist legacies during demonstrations against racial injustice.

The council voted unanimously in July to change the name and moved forward with the change even after receiving hundreds of comments demanding the decision be reversed, The Roanoke Times said.

Councilman Chuck Smith said the effect on tourism would likely be “negligible" and added that supporting the racist legacy of Jackson would be "unacceptable and indefensible.”

“Visitors interested in Jackson don’t come for the sign, they come for the man,” he said. “Jackson owned slaves and fought for slavery … Memorializing Jackson in a Lexington city cemetery announces to everyone that the city and its residents support Jackson and what he stood and fought for.”

Globally? I doubt that.

He didn’t “fight to defend the practice”.

What a bunch of ignorant scumbags trying to beat on America all they can.

” Memorializing Jackson in a Lexington city cemetery announces to everyone that the city and its residents support Jackson and what he stood and fought for.””

Honest, I have never heard that announcement.

Actually I was directly referring to the media.

But yes, there are plenty Repubs who “bend the knee” (which is actually a sign of submission, athlete morons).

I saw this coming a long time ago. It started with flag burning. I always asked; "you don't like the American flag, you want to burn it, but what will you replace it with?" I never got an answer.

Now the same with erasing our history--you cannot, good bad or indifferent--by today's standards--history cannot be erased; it is what happened, truth cannot be nullified according to your whims and desires. What will you replace all those statues, monuments, names, and all else comprising the panoply of our past? No answer......

If anyone goes to visit the site they should ensure it effects tourism by spending their funds outside the city limits.

When I worked in the medical diagnostics business, I remember there being a Stonewall Jackson Hospital there. Is that next for a name change?

Last year they renamed Boston’s Dudley Square, named after a former governor,to Nubian Square.

Why?

Because the blacks wanted it changed, that’s why.

I have been there quite often. Stonewall’s Grandson is buried there, he was a USAAF colonel and killed in action over the Reich.
These people are vile beyond any accounting. But this is now a blue town. Having a noted university almost guarantees that today. This is the same town that the Trump staffer was refused service in a local so-called restaurant.

If these people have their way they will eventually through the machinations of the W&L commies force the Lee crypt to be dismantled and the remains of R E Lee, his father Light horse Harry and the rest be buried elsewhere in obscurity just as Gimo Franco was. This may come sooner than you think.

So have the Homofascists apologized yet for bowing down to Stonewall every year for roughly 50 years?

Jackson was from West Virginia, he opposed slavery, taught his seven or eight slaves to read in contravention of Virginia law (saying nobody had the right to forbid people to be able to read the bible); worked in the fields side by side with them, and hired a free black man to be his groom during the war.

Horrors.
