Pope Francis called for the passage of civil union laws for same-sex couples in a documentary that aired in Rome on Wednesday, in a major departure from the position held by the Vatican’s doctrinal office.
“Homosexuals have a right to be part of the family,” the pontiff said in “Francesco,” a documentary about his life. “They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it.”
“What we have to create is a civil union law,” he added. “That way, they are legally covered. I stood up for that.”
While serving as archbishop of Buenos Aires, Francis endorsed civil unions for gay couples as an alternative to same-sex marriages. However, he had never come out publicly in favor of civil unions as the pope.
"It’s not surprising coming from Pope Francis because of the trail of individual statements he has made here and there over his papacy," said Prof. Bruce Morrill, the Chair in Roman Catholic Studies at Nashville's Vanderbilt University.
"Roman Catholicism does focus on natural law and it seems to me he’s touching on a different aspect of this, which is that human beings are inclined towards and need these kinds of personal relationships. The elephant in the room is obviously sexual activity which the church very explicitly teaches against," he added.
Morrill, a Jesuit priest, added that one of Francis' characteristics was "that he likes to speak and act on the principle of mercy."
"What this statement doesn’t do is change any official policies, but in a very patriarchal way he is saying we should be kind and compassionate," he said.

Face it. Homosexuals and agnostics have taken over the Jeuit Order and have come to dominate the hierarchy of the Church. The only hard real solution is the disbanding of the Jesuit order and the end of mandatory celibacy for priests. Normal, heterosexual men need to have procreative sex. Decent moral men also need to marry. Celibacy is a barrier for decent , moral, normal men entering the priesthood. Homosexuals have no problem pretending to be celibate.
Was this said ex cathedra, and if so, are you all still going to remain Catholics seeing as that would become the official position of the RCC, doctrine straight from God.
It tells me that in his heart he’s OK with abortion as well.
Christ said that the gates of Hell will not prevail against the Church. He never said that some of the successors of St. Peter wouldn’t be awful human beings. Sadly, it seems that we are living through the reign of a bad pope. We have no choice but to repent and pray to God that the tribulation may end quickly.
I have nothing against homosexuals but the Church needs to stay out of so many things and just keep it simple like staying true to originalist Catholicism.
God will still hold regular Catholics accountable for not standing up for what is true. There have been popular revolts before and better leaders put in charge. Catholics don’t have to get rid of the hierarchical system, just get rid of the obviously defective leaders who are in power now. They need to insist on more spiritual leaders.
It’s a spiritual desert in the Church. When Cesar told Catholics “no Holy Eucharist” because of the phony Planned-demic and not one Bishop, priest or Cardinal stood up to the government’s unlawful religious persecution I knew the Church was at an all time low.
