Google moves away from diet of 'cookies' to track users

Google is weaning itself off user-tracking "cookies" which allow the web giant to deliver personalized ads but which also have raised the hackles of privacy defenders.

"There is a machine learning black box that is going to take in every bit of everything you have even done in your browser and spit out a label that says you are this kind of person," Cyphers said.

"Advertisers are going to decode what those labels mean."

He expected advertisers to eventually deduce which labels include certain ages, genders or races, and which are people prone to extreme political views.

Buried in the article is this little gem.

Gee, Google...

Whatever happened to: “Don’t Be Evil”?

That slogan has become so bitterly ironic that it would make even George Orwell himself blush... It’s right up there with his Ministries of “Plenty”, “Peace”, “Love”, and “Truth”.

The question always remains.....who determines what the level of “extreme political views” are.....who measures these against what?

Delete chrome. Get Brave.

Delete Gmail. Get protonmail.

Get a paid VPN.

In 1984 it was the government that did the surveilling. In today’s USA, it’s the government by proxy. Major corporations willingly do the job that the government is afraid to let us know that it does. The government gives those corporations permission, and support.

No matter who does it, the end result is the same.

The algorithm can be fooled... if everyone started doing ‘illogical’ things online, it would quickly come undone.

People “people prone to extreme political views.” “Prone to.” So we are going from thoughtcrime to thought pre-crime.

If it works for you then great, but the VAST majority of people have no clue what you just said. And, I like using mainstream products so for me it comes down to me being in control of my metadata.

More importantly: will access to that info be limited to “advertisers” and not HR hiring managers?

Look for that to be the next big thing, to make Trumpers unemployable.

Morons.

They’re STILL keeping the tracking cookies - they’re just storing them on their servers instead of using your PC.

Cookies originated as a “context/state” storage and were kept on YOUR PC because when the internet first took off there was no such thing as cloud servers or large amounts of storage.

These things are common place now - so it makes far more sense for google to take it all in house - where it can’t be regulated, seen, or controlled by you.

They’ve also modified their Chrome browser (which is now the basis for about 80% of all browsers on the internet including Google’s but Microsoft’s Edge and Brave) to PREVENT extensions from ad blocking (and hence their tracking system behind the scenes)

But they’re good netizens and will stop using tracking cookies. See? They’re the good guys.

Private companies don’t need warrants.

The feds simply buy the information they need.

The Democrats have moved so far left, if Gerald Ford were POTUS now, he would be “extreme.”
