‘I was just really scared’: Draeger’s Market employees sound alarm on COVID-19 outbreak (Bay Area, California)

Draeger’s Market in Los Altos (California) was found to have violated safety protocols and failed to protect its employees against the spread of COVID-19, which may have led to a major outbreak last summer that included transmission among employees...

In January, the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) fined Draeger’s $13,500 after inspections between July 24 and Jan. 13 revealed “serious” violations of the state’s guidance regarding COVID-19. According to the Cal/OSHA report, Draeger’s “failed to prevent harmful exposures of its employees to COVID-19 airborne particles,” citing three instances that led to the write-up.

Draeger’s didn’t make sure its employees wore masks or maintained a six feet distance from each other in either the workspace or the break room, and didn’t have physical barriers separating employees from each other while they ate and sat in the break room...

...the report, issued Jan. 14, said that Draeger’s “did not identify, evaluate, or correct … unhealthy conditions or work practices relating (to COVID-19) that affected its employees.”

Draeger said. "...we took corrective action...we closed the employee break area to prevent spread of the virus."

The market had temporarily closed its location on First Street last July. ...Draeger told staff that the outbreak was limited to three employees: two members who worked in the deli section and one in produce. A few weeks later, Draeger’s reopened, following a deep cleaning of the store and testing all its employees. But the outbreak turned out to be much larger than publicly acknowledged. Draeger’s had 19 employees test positive last July, with 16 cases potentially transmitted among employees in the workplace, county officials told the Town Crier in a statement earlier this week. Employees estimated there were approximately 70 staff members working at the time, meaning approximately a quarter of the team tested positive.

I shop this excellent market regularly and their COVID protocols are strict and thorough. They have hand sanitizing stations before you enter, they force everybody to spritz their hands, they limit the number of people in the store, one-way aisles, there's one checkout line with people spacing enforced, masks are required, plexiglass screens at all checkout lanes -- the full nine yards of hysteria-driven "safety" protocols. I have photos of their employees all wearing full masks in March this year.

This hysteria and fining the is just ridiculous. They title of the article is hilarious: "I was really scared..." It sounds like AOC is putting words in the employees' mouths.

I suspect they didn't properly grease the necessary palms.

Just what we need -- fines like these raising our already-high food prices!

I’ve been to that market, but not in a long time.

‘I was just really scared’ How pathetic. Imagine if these people had to storm the beaches of Normandy under machine gun fire.

It’s pretty expensive, so we usually shop the nearby Safeway. But I like the old-school feel of Draeger’s. It’s nice, comforting place. It’s really too bad they got his with this ridiculous fine.

I like Draeger’s, it’s just not in a convenient location for me. Do they still have an Andronico’s in Los Altos?

Also, why doesn’t Los Altos open their farmer’s market before May?

“KAREN LAND”

Tell me about it! It is GROUND ZERO for the most insane, hysteria people in the country.

I was the only person walking around town tonight without a mask on.

My son and I were hiking in Huddart Park a couple days ago and we passed three people on our four mile hike. All of them put their heads down and used their arms to shield their faces and push their masks onto their faces (my son and I do not hike with masks). It is absolutely astonishing to see adults behave like this. It is beyond bizarre.

“Also, why doesn’t Los Altos open their farmer’s market before May?”

No idea. It is about the same time that the wonderful Kootenai County farmer’s market opens in Hayden, Idaho!

Be scared or listen to California doctors who have treated THOUSANDS and had virtually 100% success in keeping people out of hospitals.

The key is EARLY treatment with the Zelenko Protocol. It works, I was one of the thousands treated.

Dr. George Fareed and Dr. Brian Tyson share early treatment protocol

Why would anyone hide behind a mask that has no chance of preventing infection with a virus? Quit listening to idiotic criminals like Fauci and listen to doctors who can kill this lie with drugs that cost next to nothing.

An over the counter prevention dose is listed too. There is actually no reason to fear the China Joe Virus.

I haven’t been to Draegers since last year.

The line to get in is very Soviet.

Sucks because I like their potato latkes

Okay. So they had 19 test positive last July. How many died? How many ended up in ICU? How many ended up on respirators? What about the other 70 employees? How many of them have contracted it since July?

I called Dr. Fareed and he prescribed Ivermectin, HCQ and Doxycyline for me. Walgreens filled the Ivermectin and Doxycycline for me, but refused to fill the HCQ unless I was diagnosed with COVID.

The line has gone way down to nothing. Now there’s just an annoying high school kid telling you to spritz your hands and put on your mask.

I was walking up to the store a couple days ago without a mask and my hands full of trash from the car. I was going over to the waste bin just outside the door carrying my mask. As soon as I got my hands free of the trash, I was going to put the mask on.

The mall-cop kid immediately accosted me “SIR, you NEED your mask ON!” That really hacked me off and I told him to back off. That really unnerved him. I put my mask on an went shopping. Grrrr.

Yeah, lots of missing data in the article, isn't there? How many recovered? How many are still ill? Apparently there WAS one death...
"Draeger’s representatives claimed that the store kept employees apprised of the outbreak, but haven’t responded to a request for email records or other communications to confirm that it did. The representatives said the sushi department is run by an independent contractor, and the market wasn’t informed by the contractor or the health department of the employee’s death."

There is no indication if the sushi department contractor died after contracting it at the store or elsewhere.
