The Senate parliamentarian ruled Thursday that the $15 per hour minimum wage cannot be included in the Democrats’ proposed $1.9 trillion COVID-19 stimulus package.
The controversial proposal in the House bill seeks to gradually raise the federal minimum wage, which has been at $7.25 an hour since 2009, to $15 by 2025.
Elizabeth MacDonough, the chief Senate parliamentarian, has decided that the minimum wage increase cannot be included under the budget reconciliation process, according to multiple reports.
Per the Byrd Rule—a procedural step for determining the eligibility of a provision to be included in a reconciliation bill—MacDonough and her team heard arguments from Democrats and Republicans about whether the wage increase aligns with reducing the budget deficit. She decided that the wage increase did not meet the criteria to be included in the bill under the reconciliation process.
Democrats in the House and Senate earlier this month sought to fast track Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus package by passing a budget resolution to start the reconciliation process that would allow the bill to move forward by simply majority votes, instead of needing 60 votes threshold to break any possible filibuster before coming to a vote in the tied Senate that gives Vice President Kamala Harris the tie-breaking vote. The reconciliation process also limits debate to 20 hours and does not allow filibuster in the Senate, among other requirements.
The decision by the Senate parliamentarian suggests that any minimum wage increase provisions cannot be passed with a simple Senate majority and would require bipartisan support.
“President Biden is disappointed in this outcome, as he proposed having the $15 minimum wage as part of the American Rescue Plan,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement.

O, please. The fake president doth lament too little methinks.
“Elizabeth MacDonough, the chief Senate parliamentarian”
She be elected?
Traitor Roberts gives her “jurisdiction:?
It just occurred to me that THAT’S what Nanzi’s Big Ugly Wall is for. It’s to maintain a buffer zone for when Sandy Cortez’s Orcs go batsoup crazy when they don’t get everything she wants.
Sorry, antifa. Sorry BLM. It appears you were used as pawns.
Biden disappointed??? Who woke up Clueless Joe and told him?
Oops! Say good bye to yet another Biden campaign promisoid.
Joe treats his promises as if they were hemorrhoids.
“We tried! That durn Parliamentarian did us dirty! Next time!”

That’s 14 years, folks.
While cost of living has increased an average of 20% by 2020 with housing increasing an average of 30%
These cost of living should increase in 2025 to 29% and 43.6% over 2009 costs, based on a simple linear extrapolation.
My first thought was “That bastard was in the senate for 40+ years, you’d think he’d KNOW THE RULES by now.”
LET’S BRING BACK THE 5 CENT CANDY BAR
When politicians particularly members of today’s in name only democrat party started pushing for a higher minimum wage. The focus should have been on purchasing power of the lowest coin of the realm. Each time it was passed the price of an item like an individual candy bar and everything else increased. What began at 5 cents in the 1940’s was when the minnimum wage was 50 cents an hour . As the rate steadily increased so did candy bar prices to what it is today. The result has always been since it began devaluing the purchasing power of the dollar.
Phok!
We have a parliamentarian with super-voter powers?
Where was this person at passing of Obamacare? And many other illegal and unconstitutional moments?
Good fodder for fake news fools.
They will just raise taxes on those companies that don’t raise their employees wages ... according to their(lefts) liking.
Here in NJ the minimum wage ticked up to $12/hour on 1/1; in NY it is $12.50 of much of the state, $14 for some parts close to NYC, and $15 in NYC.
Honestly, even the illegals wouldn’t even get out of bed for $7.25 per hour; that is a ridiculously low wage today. You’d work more than an hour for just a bottle of shampoo or a couple of gallons of gasoline. Our grocery prices rose last spring with the ChiCom virus shortages, and though the shortages are distant memory, the prices remain high.
A bill should focus on one topic with no pork added and not hundreds of pages.
Yes, the democrats can use that excuse .. “We tried but they would not let us (put it in there) ... Evil republicans.”
But it really means they didn’t have the 51 votes. Without forcing to admit it.
The Democrats will either keep it in the bill and ignore the Parliamentarian or they’ll submit it as a stand alone and watch the GOP argue against it.
As long as Republicans and Democrats all agree to keep importing hundreds of thousands of Indians and Mexicans every year to take American jobs, the Indians and Mexicans should pay for it.
How? Other countries have huge employment levies companies must pay to hire foreign workers. Make it equal to the foreigners salary. Add a huge surcharge for any money transfers (Western Union, et al) that foreigners must pay when sending money home.
That should pay for any increase to American worker minimum wage. And only Americans are entitled to this extra bonus.
