Portland Mayor Wants to Bring Back a Uniformed Police Team to Combat Violence

Portland is in big trouble. Gun violence is up 2 1/2 times over the same period last year and ever since the city council voted a 7% cut in the police budget, the city streets have exploded in violence.

The police unit dedicated to fighting gun violence — the Gun Violence Reduction Team — was disbanded because too many black people were being arrested, which means it was racist…or something. Regardless, getting rid of a unit that did nothing all day but combat gun violence had immediate consequences.

Former Salinas, Calif., Police Chief Kelly McMillin told the Portland police, “Not to be overly dramatic, but if you lose the unit which focuses on removing firearms from the hand of violent offenders, people will die. It’s really just that simple.”

Simple or not, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and the radicals on the city council who pushed to disband the unit were quite proud of themselves for eliminating “systemic racism.”

Not surprisingly, the criminals didn’t care. All they knew was that they had a much easier time committing a violent crime.

But Wheeler has apparently experienced something of a “Road to Damascus” moment and now wants $2 million to reestablish the Gun Violence Reduction Team.

Oregonian:

Wheeler addressed the overarching question:How the new police approach would differ from the former police Gun Violence Reduction Team, disbanded in June by the City Council amid $15 million in budget cuts.

The key difference, he said, would be a new community oversight committee that would collect and publish statistics on the team’s arrests, stops and outcomes and help establish parameters for the police enforcement. The city would hire a data analyst to work directly with the committee outside of the Police Bureau. Committee members would have no ties to city government or the Police Bureau.

the Gun Violence Reduction Team — was disbanded because too many black people were being arrested

So were they supposed to be arresting people who weren't committing violent crimes with guns? Or maybe they were supposed to arresting violent guns.

You have to wonder if at any point these fools will actually admit that they were not only wrong but stupid. I suspect they never will.

".... How the new police approach would differ from the former police Gun Violence Reduction Team?...."

The Key Differences Translated into English from Progressive Gibberish:

Rules for engagement for the new police unit before engaging with violent, gun toting criminals would require prior communications with an Oversight Committee to analyze the race of the perpetrators, disadvantaged conditions under which they were raised, drugs they were addicted to and any previous crimes they had committed.

The purpose of this would be to determine if stopping, arresting or shooting the alleged criminals could be construed to be racist. Then, and only then, would the police be given permission to engage these so-called violent citizens with as little violence from the police as possible.

If, after the post incident review, it was determined that the police used too much force to stop the peaceful citizens, then the law enforcement officers involved would they themselves be arrested for violence against the community.

Members of the Oversight Committee would be made up of race-baiting activists, BLM agitators, antifa members and cop-hating citizens.

I mean, with these new safeguards in place, what could possibly go wrong?

Yup. Cops don’t pull DUI check points in the hood either .

They’d be full of holes in twenty minutes.

If I were the ex chief police, I would say “not until you show remorse,, repent In public, and admit you made a terrible terrible mistake.

The reason for this is. Because a few judges have demanded that the people who were at the Capitol protest “show remorse” before they can be considered for bail. They are demanding that anyone who wishes bail, “show remorse for what they did”. Turn this crap right back around on the scum now p.eading for a police presence after they attacked the police and defended them

It’s just like the left can never find any links when Muslims attack. They just can’t seem to find any connection to violent extremism,, somehow. They think only peacefully protesting Trump supporters are “violent extremists”

That ‘remorse’ stuff is right out of Marxist show trials and struggle sessions. The Gulag is next.
