New Mexico Democrat Representative Deb Haaland was confirmed as the next secretary of the Department of the Interior on Monday, making her the first Native American Cabinet secretary in the country’s history. Senators voted 51-40 to confirm Haaland, who was strongly supported by advocates for conservation and Native American issues.
She will soon lead an agency critical to the Biden administration’s efforts to confront climate change.
Haaland said the confirmation was another crucial step in increasing Native American “visibility.”
Haaland will soon be leading a federal agency with wide-ranging responsibilities on public lands throughout the country. The Interior Department approves oil and gas drilling and mining on federal lands, runs national parks, and is involved in protecting wildlife and endangered species. That’s in addition to its authority in Indian Country ...
Haaland was a co-sponsor of the Green New Deal, has been opposed to oil and gas development on public lands, and has taken other strong environmental stances, such as calling for more protections for the country’s lands and waters.
The vote on Monday was the narrowest margin yet for any of President Joe Biden’s Cabinet nominees. Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina were the only GOP members who voted to confirm Haaland.
New Mexico Republican Party Chairman Steve Pearce called her nomination “bittersweet” for New Mexico.
“While Rep. Haaland’s elevation to the Biden Cabinet is a proud moment for our state, her radical position on energy will be devastating to New Mexico,” Pearce said in a statement. “Our oil and gas industry is vital to our state and its financial health, and Haaland has made it clear she opposes fracking, the oil and gas industry, and supports the Green New Deal.”

The three usual spineless pubs plus Sullivan from Alaska (why?). It wouldn't have mattered if all of them voted no; the Dems would have pulled their members into the chamber to overcome pub opposition and V.P. Harris would break the tie.
She may be a worse global warming fanatic than Kerry and Algore combined, appointed for ‘diversity’ instead of being most qualified.
Over a dozen people, including Dems, Pubs and others have declared their candidacy to fill the position. NM Congressional District 1 represents most of Albuquerque and the surrounding areas.

Goodbye hunting on all federal land.
I hope the dumb@$$es that voted for Biden starve to death.
The Biden Administration is illegitimate as is the legislative body that pretended to confirm the illegitimate nomination.
She has no authority.
The elites will be using the land for THEIR food.
I hope NM gets behind Eddy Aragon. He is the owner and main host on KIVA 1600 AM. Very conservative and won’t back down like most of our NM “Republican “ p*ssies do.
From what I heard both he and Murkowski got a lot of pressure from Native Americans in Alaska to approve her.
Haaland is Norwegian, not Native American.
I have the impression that Leftist Native Americans are the most ideologically left of all Leftists.
Which means they are the scummiest of the scum.
That’s how liberals do it, ban hunting then hire government employees to shoot and trap predators that kill livestock.
Yeah, the rest of the Journal article has nothing but glowing tributes to her: e.g. Actor Mark Ruffalo, wiped away tears as the [Senate] votes trickled in; her life story, "from living on food stamps to traveling to the camps directly in the path of the Dakota Access Pipeline, and cooking green chile stew and tortillas for water protectors," has resonated with many Americans, particularly Native Americans, said Julian NoiseCat, vice president for policy and strategy at Data for Progress; Jonathan Nez, president of the Navajo Nation, said Haaland’s confirmation was a source of hope for Native American people, especially children.
Yep.
So the Norwegian woman pretending to be a feather-not-dot Indian took the oath of office?
How does someone who claims citizenship in a different nation get to do that?
More Obama II. Invest in energy.
So, what are the betting odds that the replacement will be just as bad, or even worse than she is??
“Haaland is Norwegian, not Native American.”
No, her (former) husband is Norwegian.
