They only want the wealthy to be able to afford to drive.
Europe has been semi- that way for decades, but they really want to escalate it.
Our horrible CT guv planning something likewise on the state level IIRC.

[[The gas tax used to be the obvious way to do it; it’s not anymore.]]
Then get rid of the gas taxes!

Poor people usually have long commutes because they cannot afford to live close in. They can only afford outlying counties.

Let me guess. Hmmmm.... Does the federal gas tax go away? Didn’t think so.... And you will demand a GPS device to be attached to each vehicle at our expense and then we have to go somewhere so the Feds can regularly download all the information about each vehicle, where it has been etc, or does it somehow connect regularly to the internet to report on our activities?

What? Isnt the amount of gas purchased a good indicator of how much you use the roads? We have a gas tax.
If it is just for battery powered cars then tax them.
Leave the rest of us alone.

we can't assemble...we can't practice our religion with full congregations...we can't burn in our fireplaces on certain days...we can't water our lawns on certain days...we can't say certain words...we can't take money out of our retirement without a good chunk going to the govt...
the govt tracks every single financial move unless its cash....
property taxes on any properties we dare to own...
and on top of gas taxes, we now get to pay for whatever distance we want to travel....
we are ants in a maze...

A horrible idea. Gas taxes are supposed to be for fixing road infrastructure. Too often, the gas taxes are diverted to unrelated projects. It isn’t always used to fix roads. The same will be true of a mileage tax, it will be diverted to pay for liberal nonsense pork-barrel non-road items. Taxation without representation! I’m sick of paying taxes for things I don’t agree with.

And anything that moves by road will of course increase in cost.
