It leans that way, but the FB one is remote and quite a few others not in Kali. Saw 5 with TX locations an option.

What is a “paid internship?”

I thought by definition an internship was unpaid, except medical school.

What a crock. There was a day when young people competed for internships as a way to gain experience and to pad their usually thin résumé. They were grateful to be payed minimum wage.

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Mayor Sylvester Turner is under heavy scrutiny after the revelation he triggered the creation of a $95,000 a year, publicly funded internship at the Houston Airport System for recent law graduate Marvin Agumagu.

Today the Mayor defended the decision and criticized the reporting that brought the issue to light...

A spokesman for the Mayor today said the well-paid internship awarded Agumagu was not unique and is on par with compensation with other senior staff analysts.

But by mid-morning, Houston Council Member Dwight Boykins, who chairs the Ethics Committee and is also running against Turner, announced the opening of an investigation into the propriety of the position.

“You have city employees e-mailing me daily, on the hour, about how long they’ve been working and not earning that kind of salary,” said Boykins.

Mayoral Candidate Bill King crunched the numbers and says the intern’s salary is a slap to the face of other Houston City workers.

“This young man, because of some personal relationship with Sylvester, gets a job making more than 95 percent of the other city employees, city employees ought to be outraged about this,” said King.

Candidate Sue Lovell said voters should be disturbed Turner denied knowing Agumagu in the face of overwhelming photographic evidence that he did.

“Are we to a point that interns can call department heads and say the Mayor says create me a job and it gets created within 20 days? You can’t even get a permit from the City of Houston in 20 days,” said Lovell...

Spokespeople for the Mayor say Agumagu is highly educated and deserving of an executive level position. They also say the “hiring freeze” did not apply to the Houston Airport System...

I don't know whether it went through, but Obama was trying to outlaw unpaid internships (except for government and non-profits). One of the arguments was that only rich kids could afford an unpaid job to make connections, especially in places like NYC.

I don't know what we pay the co-ops and interns, but it is nowhere close to that pay.

Don't "senior" people have years of experience?

On the other hand I was looking for typical first year salaries for lawyers and found this:https://www.usnews.com/education/best-graduate-schools/top-law-schools/paying/articles/2018-07-26/what-type-of-salary-you-can-expect-with-your-law-degree

$190,000 per year plus signing bonus for a new graduate from a top law school? Yikes!

I’ve heard that legal work doesn’t pay as well these days. That it is a ponzi scheme.

the “researchers” and form fillers are being automated or outsourced to India. There are documents the plug in all of the details now.

The lower ranks of the organization that people used to take to move up in a law firm are shrinking. The empty promise is get a law degree and “get your name on the door”, many won’t get there.

A “deeply” personal relationship, I’m guessing.

Those are the rumors, the “closeted gay male” mayor following the out and activist lesbian mayor.

And an earlier candidate (who was a 90s contemporary of Sylvester Turner) who was being groomed for mayor got caught in a “surfing for rent boys” scandal while on the clock using city computers.

Which was a great way to weed out lower class students from getting jobs.

Not every family can afford to have their kid work unpaid.

Most engineering internships are paid. The type of people who become engineers typically don’t work for free.

What’s the difference between an intern and an apprentice nowadays?

Apprentices are typically in a union environment.

I thought by definition an internship was unpaid, except medical school.

Not in the Computer Science world. My first serious internship in grad school (Ph.D. level) was at Bell Labs and paid over $12k for the summer (in 2009). People who compete for these things are already extremely competent and can perform at the level of a typical entry-level employee or better.
